Thought this would be a fun and interesting tread!!
If you named or re-named your horse(s), why did you pick what you picked?
I'll start:
Charlie - I picked Charlie after the Peanut Gallery. He is kind of a dopey/corky/fun lovin horse and he is a dark dark bay, so Charlie Brown it was. I also had a show named picked out, "Good Greif Charlie Brown" lol, but never got to use it. For a nick name, the girls at the barn call him Char Char for short.
Big - I picked Big after the show/movie, Sex In The City. He always reminded me of Mr. Big from the show - Tall, Dark, Hansome, Arrogent. So Big it was lol! Sometimes I call him Big-a-lig or Big Boy. No idea why!!
Mister - No real story behind that, I just bought him and didn't have a name picked out. The barn owner asked what his name is, so I'm all "Um, Mister" and 5 years later he is still Mister Man lol.
Whos next.........

Not very creative. Cypress Babe is her registered name. Not sure where they got the Cypress, but her dam was Cornish Babe, so there's some logic. I thought the name was snooty and planned to change it, but she turned out to be a snooty mare. Otherwise, I call most animals Buster or Dolly, and I have no idea why!
Fancy, I really like the name Charlie for a horse. Nancy Lemon's mini stallion was a Charlie, too, I think. Lots of personality goes with that name!

Was Cypress a CA bred mare? If so, maybe they named her after the city Cypress! LOL Long shot, but you never know!

Tipping is my horse's registered name. We never thought of a good barn name during the time we raced her. We did call her Tip Top but that was just me and DH.
Sealy got her name because her sire's name is Mattress. Her registered name is Simply Sealy because all my facorites were taken. I tried to name her Sertafied Account (grand sire is Private Account) but the jc wouldn't accept it since they already had a Certifed Account.

Rock's Jockey Club name is Rock'em Flyer so that one was easy. Simon is not registered and I just liked the name. Jett is not registered. DH was taking flying lessons at the time we got him so we picked Jettison and call him Jett. Cooper's Jockey Club name is Last Junction and the "rescue" called him Drifter. I thought Drifter was too sad. Didn't care one way or the other about Last Junction. His personality reminded me of the guy that lives his whole life in the same town that gets along with everybody and hangs out at the local bar on Friday nights. Cooper sounded like a good blue-collar name. If I ever show him, it would be Alley Oop Coop. Don't ask. It involved a couple of Coronas.

Sienna's registered name is Inspired Floozy. As hilarious as I think the name is, I just couldn't bring myself to call her 'Floozy'. I didn't really want to be standing at the pasture gate yelling, "Come here, Flooooo-zy!" It does work well for when she's being a pain though. I knew a little girl named Sienna and thought it was a pretty name, so I just kind of stored it in the back of my mind. When I decided to buy Sienna, her coat was a warm reddish-brown (burnt sienna) so it just worked.

Kelly, I never liked Drifter either, I'm glad you changed it. I love Cooper and he fits that name. If you do show him, Alley Oop Coop is great!

My friend has a big OTTB who's name is Cooper and he's sneaky, snarky guy but his show name is Mini Cooper bc he's so darn big! lol I named Katy because she had such a soft eye about her. And I had to wait for her show name until more personality showed up, and it was Up Town Girl cause that was so totally her! lol

Max registered name was Delux to the Max, and it just fit him. Cisco registered name was Tom Boy Friday, and since he was a outlaw Cisco kid seemed to fit.

All of ours have come with names that seem to have stuck. Top Punch is probably the oddest name. We call him Punch or Punch-kin.

I'm notoriously bad at names, so with that in mind here are their Jockey Club names followed by barn names and show names: Burning Moccasin~Moc. I have a few show names in mind for her, I'm waiting to see if USEA will allow the one I really want. Niaru knows what it is Calypso Kid~Calypso or Junior. Nevermore is his USEA and USEF name Mikey was already Mikey and it fit. Abracadabra is his USEA name. Someone else named him and I was too uncreative to change it. Windfall Prophet~she was called Fugly at the track, we call her Jane, started off Plain Jane, but quickly changed to Sweet Jane. Somewhereinbetween. Somewhere. I think this might be my second favorite JC name. She'll be shown as Some Where In Between. Elkhorn~odd name for such a gorgeous horse, now she's Ella or Ella Bean, Beanie... Nap For Sycamore~Napa (Dusty said he was always going to change it, but never did and now it stuck), Nap For Sycamore is his USEA, USEF, FEI registered name. KY Brew~Really, should a stallion have KY in his name?! Brewster is what it became Jimmie Echo~This is the COOLEST ex-steeplechase horse, his name is so much fun. Jimmie, The Jimster, Jimbolia, Jimtown, Jimmie Dean... Nice N Heavenly~Holly. She came with that name and it fits her to a tee! Carmen~just Carmen, or on really marish days she is called Common. Carmen is her USEA name Times Past~That's how I knew him on the track, so he's Times Past, or sometimes Otto, as in the school bus driver on the Simpson's. Twisted Vision~Louie he came with so that stuck, or Lewis. Question Everything~Eli he came with which also fits him or Elijah. Question Everything is his USEF name. Boardman~was almost dead when he shipped to me, he became Porter, named after a cat we saw in our vet clinic who truly had 9 lives. Porter is Porter, Porter Pot Pie, The Fat Man, Portly, and Little Brother. Something Wicked is his USEA and USEF name. Those are the present ones. I hope I didn't leave anyone out. Sadly I actually call them, "The big chestnut. No, not that one, the Other Big Chestnut." and things like that ;D PS. Still my all time favorite named TB is Martha Calling, a 1995 grey TB gelding. Martha is his barn name, and it honestly fits him perfectly! I showed him as Martha Calling too, I adored that name, and really didn't care if no one else liked it.

Mine came with the names Don and Rambo. WHen I bought each of them, asked what they called the horse, and just kept the names the same. Both are parts of the registered names.

My current horses.... I bought my first OTTB not knowing his JC name. He was named Sparky when I got him (insert eye roll icon here). My friend trailered him home for me because I was working and she wanted to try driving her new trailer. She was so excited to get him to me that when she was unloading him she dropped the bum bar without undoing the trailer ties that were attached to his halter - he panicked when he tried to back off and was still tied and started thrashing around. I managed to get the snaps undone but not before he tore the shit out of himself. His head was basically a big bruiser, so he was renamed... Bruiser. Once I got him home I did his tattoo research to discover his JC name Sabovee, which I kept as his show name. Wyatt came prenamed, he knows it, it suits him it stayed. I showed him under Gunslinger instead of his JC name (Lord Hansel) My Cheval Canadien stallion and his sire were pulled from their registered names - CanaDream Jospatriote Showytme is Showy, dad is Saguenay Eve Yukon Jospatriote is Patriote. Charlotte knows her barn name - I hate human names for animals, but don't change them if they know them. I did change her registered name from WS Rock Candy to Passchendaele Friday came named that way - registered name is Genetic Obsession, that will stay too. At least she didn't come with a Poco Doc Jac Lena type QH name! The paint mare I recently acquired came as Chloe, again, human name. She doesn't know it so I changed it to Minkie (She's a grullo). Her registered name was Miss Eternal Diamond (gag) so I changed it to Grulla My Dreams. Because it's hilarious.

Well, when I got Persuaggle I couldn't figure out where that was from - Lord Avie + Wrinkled Rose = Persuaggle? Googled it and that didn't help. Didn't have anyone to ask what they called him (since he was dropped off for euthanasia) and I thought he looked like a Charlie. I think he liked it! Much better name for a gelding in Central IL than Persuaggle......
Then for Holiday Trip....that made my DH think of the movie Holiday Inn with Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire. I didn't like Bing, Fred didn't seem to fit, so Crosby it was.......

My horse was named Cash Advance, because when I wasn't at the barn I was at the bank or the ATM getting money for something he (always) needed ;D
