perhaps i should put this in agony...but it's not holding a candle to what's going on in there, so here goes... so, i've been on this bad weight gain cycle for the past few months. i've been very stressed out with a crazy schedule, new job, and until recently, ridiculous commuting (upwards of 3 hours a day in the car). all of this has resulted in me putting on 5 extra pounds, on top of the 10 i gained over the past 2 years. now, i'm truly aware what has been causing this, and i think things will normalize a little once i'm living in ONE place, and will be there semi-permanently. but i feel like i need a little support in this. i'm definitely eating catch as catch can. but i'm exhausted all the time, and frustrated with my weight. this may not seem like a lot of weight to some of you, but i'm not very tall, and this means my clothes really don't fit that well (of course, no time to shop for bigger pants!!!) and i feel like a moron at work (at least i'm a moron with a knee length lab coat....counting my lucky stars...) because i feel constantly like my clothes are too tight. i'm liking the diet tips, also i tried the lower glycemic diet, but it's more work (e.g., time for cooking and shopping) then i have right now. so i'm going to have to try and fight this some kind of way. anyone want to do a little online support group, no matter what weight loss approach you are taking? anyway, thanks for listening to me whine. i'd be happy to return the favor, should anyone else like to join in. thanks er aunties.

Ooh...can I join? My parents keep telling me I don't need to lose weight, and I'm not really concerned about losing weight to look better, but it's going into an upward spiral. I'm steadily at 30 pounds heavier than I was 2 years ago. I know for me it's not eating healthy. I just need a little support...it's easier to grab a cheeseburger and regret it later than to eat right the first time around. I also need to try to exercise more, but who has the time? I cannot afford to buy new clothes right now, so I'd really rather lose a little weight to fit into the ones I have. I LIKE those clothes... So yeah...I'm in

Great, yup, I am right there with you. At 5'2", 5# means a lot to me. For some reason when I turned 35 my metabolism didn't come with me and stayed at 34. 3 hrs a day is too long to be in the car.
Hey, we have a hulahoop at work. When we feel like snacking, we can jump up and hulahoop for one minute. It takes your mind off the snack (for about 60 seconds:)).
It's all about comfort for me. Comfort food:)

You guys are the best. and alison, i'm 5' tall, so i'm glad someone else feels the way i do about 5#. um, and now that i'm eyeing 36 any day now, um, i don't think my metabolism is getting any *faster* if you will. i noticed a real slowdown at 27, but i lost 35 pounds (and was down to an exceedingly skinny 95) by age 30. then i was a healthier 100 to 105 for about 4 years. i thought i had weight managment licked (yaaaah....dorkball). but, for the past 3 years (actually, ever since i finished my post doc work) i've gotten worse.

See, I'm tall, but still, 5# means a lot to me too. 3 years ago, I was 5'5 and 105 lbs. I concede that that was too skinny, but still...30 pounds more and not even a whole inch gained? Outta control. I'm going to have to get fast food for lunch, but I'm getting a side salad, and perhaps a chicken sandwich. Off to count calories...

Sarafina, try a crock pot. I bought a cookbook called Fix it and forget it lightly tinyurl.com/2ebmma . All the recipes are reasonable, set up takes a few minutes usually, and you have 6-10 servings. I'm loving that I can offer healthy meals at dinner time, yet only have to cook about 3 times every two weeks. Keep salad stuff handy too, they go well with some of these meals.

Sarafina...have you thought about buying the nutra system meals? If you figure out how much you spend on food every month, a lot of people say that it's about the same or even less. The meals are already prepared for you, all you have to do is heat them up. This might help with your busy schedule. No cooking or work involved ;D I would do this except my BF will eat them too (even though he says he won't) and I can't afford to feed him too! Melissa and her husband get them and she says she was impressed with the quality of the food (except the tuna casserole). You can order the meals you want and don't have to worry about having to take what they send you.

hmmmm....i like your thinking BHK. gonna check it out. thanks! i'd like something pre prepared that's lower in sodium. most of those pre-prepared frozen meals (like lean cuisine) have so much sodium, and i really can't have it (unless i splurge on asian like JA and i will tomorrow). it's like meals on wheels for dieters! yeah! ah, the collective wisdom of the ER aunties strikes again....thanks, guys.
i'm going to try something new tonight too. i found these frozen veggies/bean mix in my frozen food aisle, and ground chicken was BOGOF. so, i'm going to try and make a little mexican stir fry (the little town i live in has a large latino population...so i'm going to try and experiement)

I'm right with you all. I think I'm having a mid-life crisis at age 41 and depressed about the fact that I won't be able to support myself if I get into the field I love (equine vet medicine and rehab-techs just do not make much money and work long hours). Basil has been lame and it's been too hot too ride Dancer consistently. My cummute is also 2-2 1/2 hrs. a day since the wonderful university I work for can't seem to find the money to provide decent parking for its employees! So I park offsite and ride their shuttle (which is free=good, but adds 20+ minutes to my commute. So I eat. Now, I'm not eating badly especially since I get loads of fresh veggies from the CSA. But then I add bread, dessert etc. And my portion control has gone haywire! Sigh. I'm taller (5'7") so although 5 lbs. is barely noticeable to others, *I* know that only 2 pairs of jeans fit now. And the weight tends to creep on unoticed. Blah!

Can I join? I'm 5'2 also, and I need my clothes to keep fitting. Can't go around buying new ones to fit my expanding butt, grrrr. I do ride regularly, and at work I walk ( I hear you on the parking CC, I have to arrive at the university at 7:30 am to have a chance to find a soemwhat close-by parking space!) /use stairs etc, but like CC said, I'm past 40 and my body just does not "work off fat" the way it used to! And I just can't get motivated to join a gym (plus it's one more expense!) what to do, what to do?!!
Well, for starters, I *could* quit eating sweets in front of the tv at night *sigh*

I love eating munchies in front of the tv or computer *sigh*. On those munchie days i grab a snack pack popcorn bag, they are 100 calories, and by the time the bag is gone my munchies are usually under control. What I would give for a bag of Doritos though!

I have always been overweight. A couple years ago I lost 80lbs. I looked great, and felt great. Then I started taking all these medications, and they make me soo tired all the time. Not just sleepy, but completly zapped of all energy. I am not working out as much (at all), and the weight is creeping back. Not to mention im a carbaholic.

I'm in as well.... Working long hours at a stressful job, and then either seizure pup wants to go out somewhere between 0200- 0400, or the cat we got from the in-laws lays across my face, or both.
I am sooooo tireddddddd. And one of the guys in my cubicle has about 5 lbs (literally) of chocolate he puts out for people to grab.
My goal is to lose about 40 lbs.
