I think I missed it. I try to watch Jen's guys run, and I really wanted to see Varda, but I wasn't sure when it was.
I know I need to sign up for that virtual stable thing, but I'm not sure I'm bright enough to do that ;D.

No, Varda was scratched. Katie said they were going to work her one more time before running her.
Quincy ran though. I think the comment said that he had a bad break. Which is usually the kiss of death....sucks when that happens.
Katie....is that right?

That's correct Jen. Varda works tomorrow morning and then we'll look for another race.
Quincy just ran terribly, she did break slow, and didn't really have it in her to catch up apparently.

OK, so now that I'm learning this racetrack stuff, thanks to Briscosmomma-
Do you have to have a published workout on Varda before she can race? And since Quincy raced, if you wanted to race her again, would she have to have another published workout to race? What lengths do you race them?
What is Quincy's registered name?
HHmm..I think that's all for now.

Any horse must have a published work in the past 30 days if they haven't run in that same time period. Either race or a published work in the past 30 days, regardless of who the horse is. So no, the horse that just ran won't *need* another published work if it races again within 30 days.

Here it's 60 days. By the time Toby runs again, it will be close to 7 weeks inbetween races. As long as he doesn't go over, he won't have to have a published work. There has only been one race in the last two books that we would have put him in and it was only two weeks after his last race, so we passed on it....

By "here", you mean Mountaineer(WV), right? Not Ohio (or both!?) I should have made it clearer in my post, it does vary by jurisdiction but I think most are 30 days (as I mentioned in the other very recent thread we had on the subject - or I think I did anyway).

Sorry, Mountaineer.... Not sure what it is for Thistledown (OH) We stick to MNR because the purses are MUCH better.

We stick to MNR because the purses are MUCH better. Bet the Ohio racing board loves hearing that.

What is a published work? Is it supervised and timed? Do they have to run a certain distance under a certain time? Sort of a qualifier? And how do you go about getting a published work? Do you just make an appointment? Show up between certain hours? It's all so foreign to me!

A published work is taking your horse to the track during training hours and having someone work it under the clock. You call in to the clocker and tell them what horse you want timed and then they will clock it for you. Then the wor is published in the racing form, on the website and in the program. You can work them however long you want. Typically our horses will work 4 furlongs to as much as 3/4 mile. We usually call the jockey's agent the night before to make sure we have a rider for the morning. If we are going to the gate for the work, we have to be there between 7:30am-8:30am

Amy, most of that info is the thread we just had on the same subject. ;D
A published work is one where the clocker at the track in the mornings records the time. That's all, nothing fancy or unusual, no certain time required, etc. Something for the bettors to go on.

Bet the Ohio racing board loves hearing that. Well, they don't have slots....so their purses really do blow. They might have a claiming, 3500 wide open, purse being 5k. Where as our bottom was 4k and the purse was 11k We were just upped to claiming 5k for the bottom though.

Good questions and good answers! I feel so educated now..lol. So why are horses scratched? When I watch TVG, I see alot of scratched horses and it makes me curious. I know that some lameness stuff/sickness appears out of nowhere sometimes, so I'm sure some of it is for that reason. Are there other reasons that horses are scratched? Is there a penalty for scratching? Can someone explain what a good "time" is? They always give the fractions on TVG at certain furlong intervals, but how fast should a furlong be run? Does CANTER think they can Purge when he retires? hee hee.. I want that pony. Ok, that was a silly question, but seriously, if we watch races where there are CANTER outlets, can we put a "watch" on a certain horse we like? It would probably be too big of a pain in the butt I guess. I noticed that I subconsciously started writing down the names of horses I liked. I was cleaning house and found bits of paper with racehorse names on them and couldn't figure out what it was for at first.
