Bindi - just remember, if you want to distract her while you are leaning on her, then use that hay bale. But if the eating habit is what you want to break, you might want to use a mounting block or you will find your horse is eating your makeshift stool! ;D

Bindi, you seriously need to start clicker training your horse. If she is food oriented then you have an advantage from the start. You need to get her focus on you, and clicker training does just that! At the moment she is treating you like that because you seem to have nothing to offer her, she is probably quite independent. Clicker training will make you seem a lot more significant in her eyes. Get yourself a clicker and a pocketful of carrots or grain, whatever she really likes, and click and treat her for looking at you, then work up to following you. If she tries to 'mug' you for treats then turn your back on her for a minute, then go back to what you were doing. She sounds like a smart mare so should understand very quickly what the clicker means and how to earn the goodies. If you want some help with this let me know and I can email more detailed instructions. GET A CLICKER! You will get that connection back that you want, but you have to start setting yourself and Lily up to WIN, otherwise you WILL be disappointed and your disappointment will cloud your relationship.

thanks guys, your messages are so reassuring. I am going to find out where I can get a clicker in NZ - do you reckon that I could get one of the kiddie ones if I can't find a horsey one??
Anyways we have just had a GREAT hour together. First off I groomed her in the pen, the whole works - have to say that she looked sooooo spiffy afterwards. Then a quick graze one the roadside and then back to the paddock. She was following me around and then I sat and picked some of the yummiest grass and I even had her nibbling my hair and blowing on me. FANTASTIC!!
So something has clicked with us and more to come with the clicker.
Claire - I will start with what you have suggested, you are right she is a smart cookie and independent to boot. If you could send me some more info on clicker training that would be great. Send it to my email, thanks so much.
Ms Relative - I had to giggle at the thought of her chewing away at my platform... would look kind of funny, esp. the size I am.. ;D

bindi - I just love it when Zane sticks his nose in my face and smells me. He can be so cute sometimes. But I always have to be careful, my dad got whacked in the nose by my Paint one time, he told me to take him away before he punched him and I did because my dad meant it!
