Suggest you purchase a copy of "Conformation and Performance" by Nancy S. Loving, DVM and use it as a guide while comparing horses. I got the book from Breakthrough, so it shouldn't be expensive. It is paperbound. >www.booksonhorses.com<. They say that horses that are straighter behind are commonly seen in flat racing TBs, steeplechase, timber horses, event horses, jumping horses and hunters. The greater the horse's ability to straighten the leg, the berter the speed of propulsion and the power of thrust. The best jobs for these horses are reacing, steeplechase, timber racing, polo and eventing. However, they warn that there is a problem with a post-legged horse whose confirmation has been taken to extreme.
This book should be of great assistance to you as you are evaluating all your candidates. The photos are great and cover every part of the horse.
What I find most interesting is how different horses bred for different sports have differences to make it easier for them to excel in the sport of choice. What makes a horse excel at one sport may be the very thing that will make another sport very difficult for them.
I think that this book will help you choose the horse most likely to be able to succeed soundly. Then, of course, the most important, is to find that horse that speaks to your heart. You are in a unique spot right now--you have lots of horses to consider and compare. I know you will choose well. Linda

DISCLAIMER: You will notice from this post that I am pretty much a conformation idiot. I like #1, except that I can't see her pasterns, and I have a thing about pastern. I also like a more uphill build (which goes back to major trauma I encountered riding a horse that was pretty level-maybe a smidge downhill- and he was a to get off of the forehand and keep together. Think of me getting off of this horse and crying all the way home thinking I was the worst rider ever because it took everything I had to keep this horse together. One day a lady who is a fantastic rider and has done some upper level H/J/Eq stuff in her day rode this horse, and after a few rounds came over huffing and puffing saying that he was one of the hardest rides ever because you were constantly having to think "don't lose the shoulder, put this leg here, move this over there, more engagement, etc..") #2 I think, I forgot which was which.....the one with the ears back...too nappy looking, and bites??? ..no thank you. #3 Or the one that no one else liked. I really like her. I hate her color, I hate that she has no white, but I really like her. There is just something about her. She looks like an Eventer to me. #4 I would buy purely on cuteness quotient. Edited because I got the horses mixed up....

Johnnie just said everything I was thinking but couldn't put into words (who's a writer? Me? Really?). Plus I didn't want to be quite so blunt Can't help being a leetle too English sometimes. But I'm SOOOOOO with Johnnie. Johnnie where ya been, I was wondering if we had to send out the search parties on you! ?

Thanks Claire. It actually took me quite awhile to make my post. I kept debating about it...lol.
Who says the English aren't blunt? My trainer is English and people are always asking if she is intentionally rude..lol. We just say that she is English and they generally understand. She's not really rude, just very strict/disciplined and things come out sounding rather curt (sp) at times. The really funny thing about her is that I have to translate for her alot of times when we go out to eat. Hello, she speaks English not Ukranian, but after the waitress/waiter asking her 10 times to repeat herself, she just looks at me and says, "Johnnie, please tell them what I want". It's very sad.
Anyway...I've been around. I just check in as Guest since I can't save my passwords on my laptop (everyone uses it). I then start to post something really quickly and it says I have to log in. This is where I decide that it would take too much time to do that, and I just forget about it, and go on. No search parties needed, but thanks for thinking of me.

Oh yeah, people ALWAYS think I'm a real big :curse: cause of my accent. It really :curse: me off cause everyone thinks my husband is all 'charming' and Hugh Grant, and think that I'm a snooty whatever. How can the same accent be so differently interpreted on a girl than a guy? Let me know if ya need more Polos lol! And find out if there's anything else your trainer misses. I got good contacts

I never really thought of the guy/girl interpretation, but it is so true. That's just weird.
I haven't been giving Forest any polos lately because I want to make sure those darn false teeth are in there good before he eats anything really hard...lol. There is a little Arab that mugs me everytime I go in the barn for them. He just loves mints of any kind.
There was something that my trainer was saying she missed the other day, but I can't remember what it was. I had seen a commercial on the BBC for an online English Market and told her to try there to find the item. It was something that sounded disgusting, I remember that..lol.
So have you found any horses that Niaru needs that she hasn't listed? I can't find the picture of the grey that she was talking about, but I can't stand nasty ground manners, or nastiness in the stall. I had a 5 year old 16.3 hand OTTB rear up on me in the stall a few weeks back. I was just trying to fix his blanket straps in the front. I stepped back and waited for him to come down, but then he started bucking in his stall, so I said forget it, and left him with a messed up blanket. My trainer had to get a chain and bring him out of the stall so we could fix it.
Niaru- please post some more..i loff looking at the pics!

From Lisann desc. It would make sense why Molly is such a good jumper, she is built exactly the same way ( i like the better pictures of #4 her hind end doesnt look AS funky as the original pic)Molly has a HUGE but extremely comfortable jump (we take 2 ft jumps as if they were 4ft lol) and she just glides over them. Ive jumped other horses that (not sure if the straightness is a factor in this) arent as straight and they arent as smooth as she is. Just my bit of info

Thanks for your input. I really liked #3 from the pic, but when I saw her in person something just didn't happen, you know?
Hmmm. I really shouldn't post anymore until I've seen Rita's Cargo in person. Now #4 (Charm, the dark bay) looks more and more appealing to me. Argh!!

Niaru... I am so excited ..... a new horsie :horsie: I like number 3 River Daylite.... build wise the best... If she is sweet and sound, what disappointed you? . I think her conformation looks very good. Performance wise I think it would be easier for this horse to do Dressage and Event. If she ran away with the trainer, it sounded like her flight instinct kicked in and she just needs some training. I like the look of Rita's Cargo. She looks very kind and could be a good people horsie.

I'd go for #3 I would never own a horse by Seattle Slew. Three horses have attempted/suceeded in seriously injuring me by biting/kicking. They were all by Seattle Slew. #2 is poorly balanced - all chest and shoulders - but sometimes that comes with race training.

That is a Friesian?!! I didn't know they came in color?! It's a beauty, and just my size, too...would you STOP throwing horses at me like this?! ;D
It's hard enuff choosing from those 3...especially after reading everyone's opinion LOL.
SMAY I don't think Rita's Cargo and my Rita have the same origins at all, I looked quickly and didn't recognize anything in Rita's Cargo's papers.
Your So Charming, however, has Canadian, British and French tbs in her papers. The more I look at her pics, the more I like her.

Oooh which french and english TBs? Thats why I was smitten with her! Jasper is french / english bred. He is less chunky than many american TBs including Avalon.
