In a thread here someone mentioned Storm Cat as a bloodline that tends to throw less desirable temperaments in horses. I was wondering if there are other known bloodlines that tend to have less then desirable traits?
How about the other side of the coin? Sought after bloodlines for various disciplines? What do you know?
I also heard that Fappiano and AP Indy tend to be very talented movers. Excelling in jumping and dressage. What are your thoughts about those?

Atreyu is a Storm Cat bloodline, and as much as I know he is very determined horse and will do anything I ask. His temperament otherwise is not the best, he doesn't like other horses at all when being ridden, is very protective of his food, bites, and kicks. I know these are things that can be taught but I have a feeling he'd still be a bit of an a** hole haha it seems to just be his nature.
I really like an TB that has Northern Dancer, even if that relates to storm cat, I know a lot of well behaved TBs with that line.
If you're looking for anything with QH lines at all I would avoid Eternal Sun, heard he passes on a nasty attitude and seen it for myself even though he threw nice looking foals

Charm's barn mate is a Storm Cat grand-daughter and is very sweet to be around and with other horses. She can be opinionated under saddle but nothing bad.
Charm is a Northern Dancer great grand daughter, and she is also very sweet to be around, does not bite/kick/pin ears whatever. Also has her moments under saddle and is VERY athletic. I had a dressage judge ask me once if she were a Canadian Tb, when I said no but she has a lot of Canadian, GB and French Tbs in her pedigree the judge asked about Northern Dancer and said she loved those origins. Said those horses were usually more level-headed and solid physically than other Tbs. At the time I had a laugh at the "level-headed" comment because Charm and I were hitting a rough patch...but we got over that.

I wouldn't not look at a horse because of a particular bloodline. Ran into a lady years ago, upon hearing my Zen was by Zen, tells me, 'Oh, my trainer tells me to never get a Zen horse.' Intrigued, I ask, 'Why not?' She replies, 'They start real friendly, then they turn on you.' LOL I ask her, 'What do you think your trainer is doing wrong.' She glares at me, after all, apparently her trainer walks on water, and walks off. Which pretty much answers my question. I have also run into a woman who had a Zen mare that she evented and hoped to find another. So different personalities for different tastes? BTW, my Vet tells me, my Zen is the nicest Zen horse he's ever worked on, so apparently there is something of a reputation there. He is smart and he knows it, which I think runs in his family. Not a beginners type personality.

I love looking at sites like this: web.archive.org/web/20090227074921/http://www.meadowviewfarm.com/TBSHbloodlines.htm It's an archived link (the page no longer exists) which is why the graphics don't load. Still, the info is there. Storm Cat's description is below: * Seems to throw nice jumping form. * Flashy, Balanced movers, beautiful over fences, on the flat and over fences. Nice all-around horses. * Storm Cat is liked more as a grandsire, not as sire. * CAUTION - Have been known to be "hot". * Sweet but can be a bit goofy, unpredictable and/or sensitive. My mare is a Storm Cat granddaughter and this definitely describes her. Insanely athletic, but also very goofy. I love it...she makes me laugh and I have to ride very correctly to get a good ride, but I know others would never want to own a horse like her.

There aren't many I avoid as riding horses but some lines I'm more weary of for racing. There are also certainly lines I prefer if I can find them. Just because of train-ability or athleticism.

Big is a Storm Cat. Amazing talent, has heart, tries hard. However, throws temper tantrums, can get hot very fast, very unpredictable and sensitive, will express how he really feels about something and doesn't hot back! BUT, I wouldn't trade him for the world!

My family has horses at Fair meadows and we finished our meet up in Claremore last month... I personally hate messing with ANYTHING that is Corona Cartel related(I dont really like anything Quarter Horse related). They are the silliest, hot blooded, hard to handle quarter horses youll come accross.
My aunt, who has been jockeying for 31 years and riding since she was little once gave me the advice that anything Nearco was more than likely going to be a little hard to handle.
Sir Gaylord (a half brother to Secretariat) throws very athletic colts but they also tend to be a little bit nutty, both on and off the track.

I wouldn't say there are bloodlines to avoid, just bloodlines with certain characteristics that would make them better suited for one discipline or another Boy's grandsire is Secretariat, he's got Nearco (wayyyy back there) top and bottom as well as Norther Dancer on top. He's never been hard to handle and is a very sweet in your pocket goof ball on the ground. That said, he's very sensitive (in good and bad ways) under saddle and will question everything. If you're patient and correct he's as easy as they come. He's athletic and will do whatever you want as long as you ask him. If you're bossy and have a "you WILL do this" attitude, he has no problem telling you he wants you off.... right NOW! ;D mta: he's not the fanciest flashiest mover, he's your average TB mover. He was bred to run, but would do alright in the hunter ring.

i got a filly a few months ago with the bf (a trainer) and we gave her a small vacation before sending her back to the track. his one warning before sending her home with me was to not forget she's a storm cat (by bluegrass cat). she showed that side a few times in the two months i had her around. she was very sweet and easy going, but she would snap for no reason sometimes. out of nowhere she would flip out, then go back to normal like nothing happened. when i bathed her i had to have help on hand just in case. i called her bipolar lol i will say that she seems much happier and more relaxed now that she's back at the track. crazy woman doesn't know how good she had it! on a side note, i would KILL to have a dynaformer off the track. those suckers can JUMP.

My riding buddy has a gelding by Stormin Fever (a son of Storm Cat). Her gelding is a stubborn, hot-tempered, highly opinionated SOB. He's slightly vindictive too. As far as I have seen, anything closely related to Storm Cat seems to have that hot temper.
AP Indy throws bad feet. At least feet for racing.
Dynaformer's are tough and usually big and raw. Nice horses.

You mean this hot temper? Honestly, avoiding anything with SC up close could make you miss out on some very nice horses. Yes, there are some bad tempered ones, but SC sired so many horses that it is bound to happen. Indy is not hot tempered. He is tough and brave and tries to do his best at whatever you ask of him, so long as you treat him fairly. Those are also traits that SC seems to pass on.

Heavily bred Native Dancer horses can have soundness issues if you talk to the pedigree gurus.
Basco is Fappiano bred and he is just the best horse. All Fappiano bred horses I have met have the exact same personality and temperament. I really think they are great amatuer horses, just so nice and easy-going. Having said that though, there can be soundness issues which is attributed to the Native Dancer/Mr Prospector lineage.

I *think* Halo is supposed to be bad. He's Nate's Dam's sire (damsire?) and I've heard and read multiple reports that Halo was a bastard. I read somewhere that he was so mean that he enjoyed drowning birds in his water bucket. Nate doesn't have a mean bone in his body but I really think he has some mental instability issues . There are days when that horse is UNHINGED like nothing I've ever seen. It's so bad that one dressage trainer told me that "horses like him shouldn't even be allowed to exist" b/c he came out for his first (and only) lesson with her COMPLETELY INSANE. We had to lunge him for 1/2 hr. before he would even stand still long enough for me to get on. Other days he's pretty ok. Even in hard core training when he's going really well he'll just have these CRAZY days.

Even in hard core training when he's going really well he'll just have these CRAZY days. I had a Saddlebred mare year ago that was out of a bloodline many wanted to avoid as they were very HOT. Well, I had more then one trainer say things much like that to me about her. I was patient and did things a little slower then one might normally do. She ended up being the most amazing horse and won everything all the time. So many people ate their words. Hopefully, you will have the same good times. I believe in bloodlines to some extent but I believe even more in training, kindness, patience etc... It won't change an inborn trait but it might make you more understanding of how to deal with it.
