So I get to the barn today and Forest has one leg that looks like this Underneath the bandage, it looks like this What happened you might ask? One of the barn dogs decided to nip him and ripped his vein open. It wouldn't stop bleeding so they had to pressure wrap it and put that blood clotting stuff on it. Same dog also nipped the new guy, but not as badly.

The vet looked at it and said to just try and keep it clean/bug free and not to keep him stalled as long as it didn't start bleeding again, so he went into a small paddock. He's sound on it. It just looks ugly and I'm sure it hurt like hell.
People at the barn were asking why I was taking pictures of his leg. I said that they were for Forest's lawsuit because he is sueing Rocky for personal injury...lol. None of their beeswax why I was taking pictures.
No one called. I was already on my way out.

Yowch-that looks painful. I'm surprised he's not a little ouchy on it. I would think it would be sore. Hope the dog doesn't do that on a regular basis.

Sheesh, what kind of dog was it? A heeler?? (sorry, bad pun). A friend had to find a new home for her heeler, because the dog would not leave the horses alone. She would nip them and run them through the electric fence. Twice, I just happened to be coming down the road and here were her two horses happily trotting along their merry way. But, they are both grain Ho's and came right up to my bucket. ;D
Is that you jumping the little cutie, Johnnie?

Poor Forest! Run Forest! Run away from the dog! That is really dangerous to have biting dogs at a horse farm, isn't it? Why is poor Forest's fetlock all black like that? Is it the clooting powder turned black? Gosh that's ugly. A vein or artery that won't clot is so scary - Winny has a couple of varicose veins on his neck from, evidently, repeated procedures at the track which cause his veins to thrombose. ANYHOW, once the pony got a good bite on his neck, opened one of those veins and MAN...the BLOOD! It just poured out of his neck, down his chest, and dripped off his fetlocks at the ground! I had a heart attack when I spotted that white horse covered with red. But it was the TINIEST Of superficial cuts, actually. My vet laughed at me when she came to "stitch" it....it was barely anything. Like just a bandaid covered it! I'm glad Forest isn't lame. It's probably just tender there.... did he have to get booster tetanus? Or that isn't for dog bites, is it.

So are they gonna keep that dog locked up? He's quite a liability to the barn. Am so happy no one seems inclined to bring annoying dogs out to the barn with them where I am right now. The owners dogs are kept kenneled during the day. The Akita roams the barn at night. hehehe. There's been some tack thefts in the area lately, so he has guard duty. Oh, and I don't mind people that bring dogs, just as long as they mind them. Or do like a friend of mine used to do with her boxer. She'd leave him in the car while she got her horse ready, then let him out and down the trail they went. Oh and he was disgustingly well trained. Cause she'd leave him in the car with the door open and he wouldn't come out until she told him to. Disgusting.

The black stuff is the blood clotting stuff. That photos was taken before we washed it off. The cut is actually not huge, but is a little over an inch long. Like SMay was saying, when they hit a vein or artery, it just pours like crazy. The dog is a Heeler mix actually (however did you guess? : . His other half is Rottweiler. He's just a mutt that our trainer, yes, our trainer's dog, picked up like 7 years ago. It's not like this guy hasn't been around horses since he was just a few weeks old or anything. Yes, it is becoming a habit. I have been actually riding on 3 different horses in the arena at different times and this dog has come by and grabbed them by the leg. All 3 bled. It made for an interesting couple of moments. The dog also bit the new guy, and I've even seen him reach up and snap horses on the nose that are hanging their heads out of the stalls drawing blood. Another girl who used to board at the barn, but bought land and moved her horses was out yesterday and asked our trainer if the knot that her horse has from her dog biting it was ever going to get better. The dog has to be tied when lessons are going on because he likes to "help" the horses get over the jumps when they are balking, and he will bite the horse if he sees you having to kick. That said, nothing will ever be done with the dog although one son has said that he is going to shoot it. No, that is not me riding. I wish I was that thin and a teenager again..lol -see my fatness in my avatar pictures on the bay. That girl is my riding bud Alison.

So, is she gonna pay all the vet bills? Cause I tell you what, especially as she KNOWS this dog has a biting problem it's only a matter of time before he does real damage or bites a kid. Though I bet if you tell her that, she'd probably say, 'Oh, he'd never do that.' Ah ha, he's already bitten numerous horses, so why wouldn't he??? Even if she's a nice person, she is not thinking with her head with this one.

Ack, I'm surprised the trainer keeps the dog around after so many bites. I have a heeler and he's never bitten my guys nor will he chase them unless asked to bring them in. He'll whine and cry if they're running as he wants to be out there so bad but won't chase until I give the command. On the other hand, my hound dog chases the horses constantly and is always out there barking at them trying to rile them up to run. He rarely listens to any commands! Unfortunately the horses just usually run straight at him and try to stomp him and then he takes off for dear life!

The TRAINER's dog did that? And he's a repeat offender? Geez. I'd lock him up or put him on a run!
I sometimes take Stella with me to the barn. She's such a whimp that she's always glued to me and I hardly ever put a collar or leash on her. She's scared of horses, too, and won't go near them if she can avoid it!
She had a fit the other day, though, when I was with Charm in the roundpen. She got jealous and started barking at Charm, who in turn started shaking her head at her. :loon:
My silly dog thinks that horses are more dangerous from the front than the back, and thinks she's safe 'heeling' at the horses hind legs...Rita didn't mind, Will didn't mind, but Charm does. Hmmm I'll have to do something about that if I want to go trailriding with both of them some day.

Man, that's nasty! I cant believe the trainer just lets the dog continue to do this. At one barn where I was at they had a dog that started to chase the horses but had not gotten any bad bites yet, just nips. (Also owned by the trainer there) They put the dog in the arena with a gelding that would NOT put up with any of that. Just turned the two of them loose. There was a chance that the horse would kill the dog, but the trainer thought it was preferable to the dog injuring the horses, and did not want to keep the dog tied up all the time. Well, no one got hurt or killed, but the dog learned his lesson and stopped chasing.
