I'm giving up for the rest of '07. I'm just going to start fresh and work hard Jan 1 2008! My goal will be 10lbs, plus work my way up to jogging 3 miles everyday. Who's with me! I mean, its just too hard during the holidays

I'm with you on resolutions. My goals are 15 lbs, and work my way up to Pilates 5 days a week. I never realized how much my core strengh comes into play in riding. And I HAVE no core strength...I had a jumping lesson the other day and it was downright embarrassing. So I'm going to eat what I want until Jan. 1, and then work on starting fresh!

Well, I think from now until Jan 1 we could slowly drop some of the really bad stuff from our diets For example, if you go for fast food, don't get the french fries! Drop mayo from your sandwhiches, etc. That way it won't be such a shock Jan 1!

I'm with ya! I'm planning on quitting smoking (oh My!) and resolving to take the stairs at work instead of the elevator. 4 flights... I know when I start doing it, I'm going to be so out of breath... but maybe after while, I'll see the results in the fitness and won't be so discouraged if I don't drop a lot of weight.

I'm hoping in Jan I will have time to get to the gym again.... especially since it is just on the other side of the building. And to convince myself that I don't have to ALWAYS do 1.5 - 2 hours at a go so that I don't totally skip if I am working too late.

I never make any New Years resolutions, but looking at some recent photos, for 2008 I pledge to lose 10-15 pounds before July. Sarting AFTER the holidays of course. Is that unrealistic? What kills me is that I don't eat THAT much, and what I eat isn't THAT bad diet-wise, and still I feel fat and flabby. yuck.

1-2 pounds a week is realistic. 3500 calories = a pound of fat. So if you eat 3500 calories more than you burn off you gain a pound, eat 3500 calories less than you burn and you lose a pound. You want to make sure you eat at least 1200-1500 calories a day or your body enters "starvation" mode and you screw up your metabolism. Your best best is to eat 1500-2000 calories but to do exercise to burn off the extra calories. You can't "spot" train, working your butt isn't going to burn to the fat off your but (might actually add muscle), you lose the fat from the last place that your body stored it. If you guys have any questions feel free to ask...I have a degree in Sports Medicine that is just sitting around collecting dust lol.

The last New Year's resolution I made was to quit stealing every ink pen that I picked up to sign something. It actually worked too, although I still have a big handful of pens that I stole before the resolution. I cannot even remember when I made that resolution now, so mannnnnny years ago now. But this year, I am resolving to remove all the stress from my life that I possibly can. I am beginning by moving from this tiny little trailer, to the house by the lake. (Right now the stress level is a little over the limit, holidays, working, moving . . . .) But, I have really got to make some changes in my life, and I am starting with STRESS And for the rest of the world my wish is for PEACE - peace on earth, peace of mind . . . . . I know it is asking for a lot, but, I think everyone will agree, PEACE would really be nice.

I can't really start my resolution until after the baby is born but count me in after that! I want to get back down to 130 pounds. That was my weight before getting pregnant. So.....yeah, this is embarassing but I've packed on 45 pounds so far. Who knows how much more I'll put on. I don't really feel like I eat THAT much more than I did before but my level of activity has diminished a lot. Still working in the barn everyday but not like I used to. I have a bet with the guy who works with us in the barn as well. He goes 300 pounds. The bet is whoever loses the weight first wins. We haven't set what the prize is though. I told him whatever I have to lose after the baby is what he has to lose. Good incentive for both of us I think.

I don't care about the numbers. I just want to feel firmer and strong. My resolution is to get back into a Yoga class and stick to a healthy diet. It's been easy for me to avoid a lot of processed foods, which I think are just deadly, but apparently I should leave out some of the butter and sour cream, too.

T.O.M., then what do you do to get fat off your thighs that's been there FOREVER? It's been packing on for at least 2-3 years now, and I'd love to get it off this year. I don't weigh THAT much, but I'd like to lose 20 lbs and feel like I look good again!

You can't judge it solely by weight though. You can lose inches, but not weight..and vice versa. Typically you can't lose both at once. Depends a lot on strength training, toning etc. I go to the gym religiously..watch what I eat, pilates and yoga are my friends, etc. I haven't lost a pound really in the past year..I fluctuate between about 5 pounds. When I was 17, I lost almost 50 pounds, since then, nothing. However, in the past year, I've lost a pant size and will hopefully be down another in a bit. I'm also in probably the best shape I've ever been in. Best anyone can guess (doctor, gym people) is that the gain in muscle tone is offsetting any weight loss. Figured I'd throw that out there...don't just count the pounds.

Good point, Lis. I'm more concerned about the inches than the pounds! It is frustrating though to know that when I was a junior in high school, I weighed around 110. Then I started on my antidepressants and gained some...now I'm 5'5"ish and around 140 lbs. I don't care about the weight, just the flab I'm starting a gym schedule next semester, and going out to buy an ipod shuffle today Hopefully that will motivate me.
