on Tango's ground manners!
I was on vacation last week so she said she would work him a couple of times for me. I've been having a hard time with him this winter. Between weather and personal injuries, It's been very difficult for me to ride him regularly. (Not the best thing for a young OTTB in re-training). I also feel like I've taken him about as far as I can go on my own. We're just starting to get into more of the finess type of stuff. I haven't totally mastered this myself so i really shouldn't be training it. So I've asked my trainer to put some time in the saddle for me. She said she'd work with him a couple of times to see where is in his training, then recommend what she thinks would be best for him. See, she just had a baby the beginning of Dec. so Tango and I have been quite a bit on our own for the last several months.
Anyway, back to my point. She sent her 11 year old son out to get Tango out of the field for her. When he told her "I don't need a halter to get him, Mom." She was little worried so kept an eye on the two of them. So, out marches Andew with a lead rope to get Tango. (A little more background...Tango is turned out with three mares and new gelding that is trying to worm his way into the herd.) She said Andrew walked right up to Tango, gave him a little pat and THREW the rope over his neck (thank god I've been working on that!), wrapped around his throatlatch and started walking toward the gate...at one point, Tango stopped and didn't want to continue but Andrew very calmly insisted and Tango walked on. She said Tango had his head down and relaxed almost the whole way and never crowded Andrew or pushed into him with his shoulder. She was very impressed! I'm so proud of boy (and of myself ) Selfless brag! But we've come so far!!
