-Sorry, this is very long: Well, I did my schooling show Sat with Nave, Mr. Hyde/Jeckel. At this point, I feel very incompetent to work with this high powered animal and looked jealously at those 15.2 Western horses standing around getting ready to show. My trainer was frustrated with me not sending him and bending him, and getting in that forward "it's gonna blow" position at times. It was very difficult to relax to counter his frenzie. (Dr. Hyde -Nice even canters to jumps, power steering, such a good boy! Mr. Jeckel - eeek! there are foreigners here and trailers, music, excitement, where's the race gate! you want me to line up! Wanna see my sidestep?) I had to stop giving him treats as rewards with the music playing in overhead arena speakers or standing in line up, he became mouthy overnight. And, I've just been getting him over shaking his head (attitude) that I decided not to try the pom poms for this one. I may try it next time after the wild man I rode. Instead, I put in a good warm up early when the arena was calm and my trainer got on him when the music first came on then handed him back to me to ride. Then, he stood fairly quietly for about a 1/2 waiting for the areana to clear, but began to get upset again so I lunged him (in control, but with some attitude at times) for 10 minutes and let him blow off some steam. Mounted back up and walked, trotted and let him relax again - as much as possible. Class time. Hello Mr. Jeckel. Heh! He bucked a few times in the first class (too many horses, even staying on the inside, it was a pack). After two hours of riding he settled some and we got first in both of the hunter under saddle classes. He is awsome when he is on. However, it may have been for most improved That was great. However, I can't believe the work to get him to the point where I could just ride him and direct him versus working with him for every single step. Still couldn't stand in line up (although he gave me more and more time in it before I'd let him break and walk) Tell me if I put in the monumental efforts like Sat. he will eventually come around? I've had an appendix 1/4 that was hot, but wow, this guy is something else! I'm not sure I'm up to this challenge. Thanks for listening!

Welcome to the wonderful world of showing! Even when you think you've had the stinkiest ride and bombed - VIOLA - in the blue! ;D Congratulations!! Wasn't that FUN?? Wasn't all that work, anxiety, preparation, stress, marathon hours, doubt, and all the other golden moments worth it?? haha!! Your debut sounds EXACTLY like mine. And did Mr. J/H also include a fart with that buck, like my Tucker? A REAL crowd-pleaser, let me tell ya! I also had 98 degree weather and 95% humidity to deal with. I kept thinking the whole time "THIS is NOT fun!". But then time passes, the bad parts fade away, and you soon start thinking "I can DO this!" Your guy sounds awesome and no doubt you both are going to do fine!

I haven't done any shows yet. Your training show sounds exciting! I am hoping to show this year, but I have a long way to go. I ride Mr. Sensitivity (aka Mr. AAHD)...... slide this way than that. Oh, I am suppose to be quiet and stand here? Ok..... I will suck on my tongue...... Aren't TB great creatures.....

Well guess what? You did good! All that trouble and craziness and he settled down enough to win HUS? Well, I guess you found out what you gotta do...ride him for two hours prior to every single class and you'll win! I have only had this happen to me ONCE in my life because I don't show much at all, BUT...my Standardbred was at his only second show and came out of the box fired up like you wouldn't believe. We got tossed out of our first two classes cause he had his tail over his back, and had inflated himself to about 19 hands tall..... He was WAY excited. So I proceeded to work him in the warm up arena for about two hours....like you said. He then settled right back down into a normal horse and won a couple of classes and even was able to compete in the fun classes at the end - the races - and got second place in about four of those! He just had so much energy in the beginning, he couldn't contain himself.

Don't worry, it gets better. I am attempting to show Carambi again this year after a disasterous effort 2 years ago. He showed how well he can rear and not go into the dressage arena I've also had to put some time into taking him foxchasing. One day he is a gem, the next day-the Mr. Jeckle come out! It is very frustrating to have to ride every stride but I just keep thinking of the awesome field hunter I will have after he understands what he is supposed to do. And that is exactly how I look at it. My horse does not understand what I want and I just need to show him what he is supposed to do. Once that is done, the rest is a piece of cake! Good luck and have fun! Oh, and can you take him on some "field trips" to different barns to school in a non-show atmosphere? That really helped my guy alot.

Luci, sometimes it's hard to find the fun in all of it, but it sounds like you did what you needed to do and it WILL get better. Mileage is the only solution.
smay, you got kicked OUT of a class? Man, that tops me. I did have a judge come up to me in the line-up and ask, "So, how does it feel to ride a powder keg?" (My old AQH mare only has a QH body, the brain is all TB.)
I did give up hunters after that, but that doesn't mean you should, Luci. CC is right, school at other places so that going away gets to be normal. Also, try going to a show, but not showing, just schooling.
Don't forget to have fun!

I love the idea of trailering him to some other places to just work. He's great about trailering. My trainer has to take me because I don't have my own trailer, but I think she would be interested in doing it. He was his old self last night. Ahhh I needed a nice ride. I'm ready to deal with crazyboy yet again. When the trails are o.k. again I plan to let him experience more of the world outside the arena. (In hand in the begining - I do value my life hehe!) I think it will do him a lot of good. It really helped my appendix 1/4. So . . . how does it feel to ride a powderkeg? Hehe! Oh this stuff does keep us humble, eh?

Yup, I wholeheartedly support the hacking out thing, too. We always have done that and it does everyone's mind good once you get past the life-threatening parts. It's relaxing for everybody. I must say, though, it's easier said than done depending on where you live. We used to be able to ride out from my Mom's in all directions and be gone for hours, but open spaces are dwindling and people aren't so nice anymore. We have had some great times trailering away to some places in MD - Spring Valley Park and Gunpowder Falls. Anybody know those? I've been thinking since I found this board that it would be neat for a bunch of us to get together in a place like that and have a nice ride. I know I'm among a minority in PA, though. Ahh, love those powder kegs. Watch that fuse - she's gonna blow! ;D

Of course I know Spring Valley park!! It takes me about 35 minutes to get there w/truck and trailer. And I spent hours upon hours riding the Gunpowder trails as a kid;D. Our farm is about a 20 minute ride away from the Prettyboy reservoir trails. I just have to go into the woods behind my farm to get to them.
My first dressage show is April 26 at Spring Valley Park. That is, IF it EVER stops snowing so I can get the trailer out and do some solo-loading practice!!

Oh, CC, I want to come watch! I was at a dressage show there a few years ago. My sister had a TB that had so much presence (and attitude) that we thought we'd try it. He wasn't bad - until the fox ran through! He was quite a character. Unfortunately, he was just more than my sister wanted to deal with and was put up for sale. He did not, however, find a new home before he died of colic. I fence-judged there once, too. I love that place! Gunpowder is really cool, too. Unfortunately, my only experience with it was not great. My old AQH thinks everything is a horse race, so I stopped hacking her out unless I was only with my family. My Mom said that she was on a ride there and it was nice and slow, so I chanced it and took my mare down when the next one came around. Well, it musn't have been the same bunch of people, 'cause the barrel racers up front decided right away "this must be a TIMED event". My mare jigged, plunged and frothed the ENTIRE time (hours). Her stamina is amazing and her behavior actually gets worse as she gets tired. It was horrific. Thankfully, I'm so used to her that the worst I got out of it was a sore back and a bashed knee - do you know the part right after you go downhill from the road with all the winding among saplings? The score was: Tree - 1 Me - 0 Maybe we can get together some time!

Sure, you can come watch! Can't promise that it will be spectacular-my goal will be to just get IN the ring LOL! The part of the Gunpowder I used to ride was near Loch Raven reservoir. I do know the section you are talking about...we call it the Bunker Hill section. My hunt club was supposed to be looking into foxchasing at Spring valley. Our field master and her husband (a whipper-in) live in Glen Rock. Have missed the last 2 meetings so I'm not sure if there has been any progress. The last club to hunt there was very naughty and rode through farmed fields . NOT a good thing to do. So we don't know if they would allow another club in (although we are very small and well-behaved!). Anyway, the dressage club I belong to (CAMDA) is holding 2 shows there this year and 2 shows at a farm in Stewartstown. And yeah, I would be up for meeting there for a nice trail ride! How far from Spring valley are you?

Hi again CC, Believe me, if you know anything whatsoever, I will be impressed. After all, I've only been once and I don't think my sister's horse got extra points for "highest head and tail carriage". I would luuuuuuvvvvv to try hunting. I could never chance it with my old mare 'cause passing the Master would be her only goal and I hear that's frowned upon. I would like to try it with Raven. It takes us about an hour to get to Spring Valley. That drive is no big deal at all to us. My Dad has been commuting to Baltimore for years, my sister lives in Glen Burnie and goes to Towson, we used to go to SVP for 4-H shows and my old mare goes down near there for her ultrasounds. If it ever gets to be nice out again, I know my Mom and I would love it!
