Hi all,
I'm a newbie to exracers and to the board. This fall I got a four-year-old mare and haven't had a chance to do much with her yet 'cause of a PA winter/no indoor combo and an 8-month-old son. I used to dabble in B Hunters and A Amateur Jumpers. I hope I can keep this horse since my other mare is now 20. Even if Raven only turns out to be the best-looking trail horse 'round these parts at least I'll be doing a horsey something. Where is everyone located? Anybody in the Northeast? Anybody else a trying-to-stay-at-home-Mom-but-not-a-millionaire-how-can-I-afford-my-horses? type? Thanks for replies and "hi" to everyone!

Welcome Ravens Mom. Sounds like a good project. There are a bunch of us in the Northeast and even more in Ohio. As for me, I'm in the Chicago area myself.

Welcome! Congrats on your new mare AND your son! I can identify...I have a 20 month old son, and we went into debt shortly after he was born. I'm working full time now, but my hubby has gotten really excited about one of my business ideas. I'm ramping up, and I think I'll soon be in business for myself! We live in Plano, TX. I have Easy King, who I got off the track when he was 10. My parents live fairly close, so they keep him on their property. King isn't sound, but he loves to bowl and play music (clicker trained). Welcome, and I think you're the first newbie on our new board! Woohoo! BTW, do you have any pics of your mare or baby? We'd love to see! You can check out my Nate's website here: www.justnate.netChristi

Wow! Isn't everybody nice! I'm near Harrisburg, PA. I have pictures of Raven and Logan and will scan and provide when possible. Not much time to post more right now. I'm working nights as a hostess/server at a restaurant and have to get ready, get Logan ready, drive to husband's work, hand off baby and go to work. I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone. Take care!

Well, certainly sounds like you'll have fun either way you go with your new horse! Personally, I'd be happy if I could get either of mine to do either things of yours! I have one TB and one STB, plus a little pony for my 7-year old daughter, who lately seems to get ALL the prime horse time around our place cause she's in Pony Club. Anyhow, good to have you on our board, although we are currently undergoing a crisis with one of our valued member's horses..... we're all very nervous and worried about her and her mare. By the way, I'm in central Ohio.

Congrats on ur mare and WELCOME. Raven is my mares dams name, wonder if theres any relation there...I am also a stay at home mom with 4 kids ages 5 to 14 and I am broke all the time LOL. I was in nursing school but I quit when I has gotten sick and never went back so I just kinda hang out here now LOL. Im in NY state Sullivan county, near Monticello Race Way if you know where that is. Ive had horses my entire life(first pony before I could walk) and pretty much done most anything that can be done from horse back, barrels, speed events and steeple chasing were always my favorites thou. I hadnt had a horse of my own for some years and then last spring I bought my first OTTB mare, got the deal of the century on her and fell in love at first sight literaly. Tango is going to be 7 next week, shes 17.1H, dark bay with no white aside from about a 20 haired star, very big built and has an attitude problem LOL...but I love her to pieces. We havent really done all that much but we got to know each other, lots of ground work, slow saddle work and we bonded pretty well. I dont really have any plans to do any showing just enjoy her, I have RA(arthritis) that is pretty bad sometimes so I really dont commit to anything that I might not be able to finish like showing. Im happy to just have her and enjoy being with her. I board her at nasty barn, long story, thats about 5 minutes away and do self care so I am there lots which I really enjoy. Ive also non-officialy adopted a 47 year old retired eventer at the barn who I adore, my old guy is just amazing. I have been trying to move from this barn for some time but its pretty expensive to board around here and I havent been able to find anyplace I can afford or do self care at plus I want to be able to bring my old guy also so affording 2 horses on full board is impossible for me right now. Well again welcome, Im glad you found us and congrats on your new mare....we will need pics of her to make you an officail board memeber thou ;D.....LOL

Hi RavensMom! Welcome to the best group on the web! I am also located in PA ~ about an hour south of Harrisburg, can you say Pretzels!!! I have 5 horses - Jaffa ~ A leadline pony for my son, Beau~an ex-racer STB Gelding, Smarty ~ Ex-racer Tb Gelding, Bitsy ~Race-trained, but too little, retired before racing 2yr Filly and Sweety~ a QH Mare. I'm also your "trying-to-stay-at-home-Mom-but-not-a-millionaire-how-can-I-afford-my-horses? type?" but becoming increasingly difficult as I have just separated from my husband, actually he separated from me, but that's an etirely depressing long story . Currently have them boarded but hope to be buying land sometime in the near future. Considering North Carolina ~ after this bitter winter we've had here in PA I'm ready for the South. Although not too far south away from family. Anyway congrats on your new horse!

Wow a new baby and a horse does sound like a job. A GREAT one ;D I have one hundred thirty-two kids but that's at work. None at home. At home its just me and the seven horses (TB, 2 STB, QH, Arabian, TNW, and a mutt), 2 donkeys, eight dogs, six cats, a cockatiel and one lonely chicken.
Glad to have you hear. I drive through Harrisburg a couple times a year on my way to Philly to visit family or transport nephews. I'm in Kentucky.
Good luck with Raven. Looking forward to pictures!

Welcome! Are you on the COTH bb also? Or maybe the UDbb? I seem to remember seeing your name somewhere else!
I am in MD but about 10 from the PA line...so about 1 hr. 15 min. from Harrisburg. Truth, who posts here, is also near Harrisburg.
I have a 15 yr. old race-trained but never raced TB gelding named Carambi and a 16 yr. old homebred QH/TB gelding named Dancer.

Hey all, So sorry about Rita. My old mare lost a foal last spring in her 10th month. It was terrible. She was so far along that he just looked like he was sleeping. She was beside herself for days. My family and I have lost four others besides the foal to various causes. It never gets any easier. Here's hoping that Niaru finds more love in her heart for another! Tina: actually Raven is the name my sister gave her 'cause she's so dark w/ no white. Her name is Doubleuponwhat. Can't really go calling her that. She's a Thunder Puddles daughter with Halo back on her dam's side. Apparently she decided NOT to follow in Daddy's footsteps and didn't wanna run. I don't know how many starts she had. She seems unscathed except for a splint which seems attributable to her pigeon toes (one worse than the other). She also has a hernia which I'm hoping will only ever be a cosmetic flaw. I got the best deal of all on her - $0. Those usually turn out to be the most expensive in the long run, no? She's quite sweet and has a cute face and a nice eye, so we thought we'd give her a go. I've only been on her once, briefly, but she learned word commands on the lunge after only two sessions. Anybody know anything about eventing in the PA area? Although I wouldn't mind just riding, if I ever fell over a fortune on the sidewalk I would like to go back to competition of some sort. I don't think I can do hunters (bored) and am tired of three-foot jumpers and don't think I can afford the AOs. I would love to do cross-country and stadium. I love dressage for training, but would be soooo nervous competing in it...Anybody know about eventing in PA area? MD is also a possibility. Renee: buying land in NC? Take me with you! Is winter over yet?! Christi: Nate is a doll! CC: No, not me. Never heard of them. What are they about?

Ravensmom, you have just found the best forum ever. Everyone here is so supportive, nice, honest...Welcome!
I am in southern Maine, have 2 young kids and a flexible work schedule, and a non-horsey husband who has been very supportive these past days (as you know, I just lost my beloved little mare) and urges me to get another ex-racer soon, which coming from him is just unheard of.
This forum is the best!!

niaru, you are awfully nice and brave to be here for others today. You will love another, but never replace her! Supportive hubbies are wonderful! My first one wasn't, but my current is fantastic. Of course, I did meet him at a horse show, so... He grew up in "the business" and although he doesn't ride, understands what I need. Of course, it also works against me, I can't hide anything. "Oh no, Honey, we can afford to go to this show. It will only be about $100." ;D Hi Katie. I think I just drove past Lehigh last week on my way to an interview. I didn't get the job which is just as well. Lots of money, but too many hours, I think! I have to get ready for work. Have a good evening everybody! niaru, Rita will see you in your dreams.
