This sounds like such a stupid question but I have to ask it.
After feeding Lily tonight, she is on a non-heating dry food and some carrots, she did a beautiful run across the paddock, bucking etc - while I watched all I could think was that I was glad that I wasn't on her... *L*... Then she came up to me again and the snorting thru her nose was amazing. At first I thought that she was puffed, which could have been a contributing factor but she continued on for five-ten mins. I managed to pat her but she was definatly het up so I decided to just sit on the trough while she wandered around.
I guess that I am thinking that this was an assertive behaviour towards me so I decided to ignore her while she was like this and walk away. Am I over reacting?? Was that the right thing to do?? - ignoring her that is.
oh I can hardly wait to get her doing some work on the lunging rope... I get a day off on Sunday and am praying for a fine day.

It sounds like something freightened her....... prey animals will snort/blow to warn the rest of the herd of danger. Deer do this also. If any of mine see a stranger cutting across our field, they will blow and prance and tails over back. I don't think this was aggressive behavior unless she was trying to move you along to safety. She could be feeling good also and be bucking and yeeehawwing, but horses usually don't blow unless destressed.

I also see the horses blowing at each other when they are heading towards the food, or even just eating. I think it can also mean "stay out of my space".

WHen they see a person or a coyote or deer herd or something out near their pasture, they go snorting around making themselves look really big. The pony is the cutest doing it, cause he puts his little tail strait up and blows super loud. That snorting is definitely a warning sound - it's pretty loud too, isn't it?

well after that advice I have figured it out. I usually take my dogs into the paddock with me and they usually have a snack on some carrots and feed too. Maybe sharing wasn't the in thing tonight. Plus, just before all of this started my partner came over the paddocks banging the gates.. *L*.. maybe she thought that she would have to share with him too.
Solution, leave the dogs out of the paddock and let Lily know that I feed Tom elsewhere.. ;D

My Paint will do that when he gets excited. Like if I take a can with rocks and shake it at him to get him running around the pasture, he will come up to me blowing. But after I talk to him he calms down.

That could mean almost anything from 'Hey, lookit that scarey thing' to 'Who moved the truck' to 'Oh BOY do I feel good!!!'.
Don does the run and snort and blow every day when he is turned out, and a sparrow will set him off, just because he IS feeling good. He will step out of the barn, and head goes up, ears strained forward, something moves, eyes bug out, tail goes up and off he heads in the direction of whatever 'offends' him. He does that high stepping trot, rollers going full speed. Today's offence?? I replaced the lid on the old feed mill, as the wind blew it off yesterday, and just the change set him off..........*sigh*. Wonder what he is gonna do when I pull the trailer outta the shop and park it outside???
