Warning, this is a rant. I am just sick. I went out this evening, took Cypress for a nice walk, and decided to look at her leg very closely before returning her to her stall. On the right hind leg, just below the hock, EXACTLY where she hurt her leg 5 weeks ago, there is an ugly puncture. Actually, there's one puncture, then a smaller one about an inch below it, then a shallower scratch that drags down her leg several more inches toward the fetlock. It sure looks to me like she backed into a nail, then pulled her leg away and up a bit, causing the lower puncture and scratch. I am furious. This had to have happened in a stall and it had to have happened since 11:00 am this morning. I hosed the leg for about 10 minutes to wash away any crud. Then dabbed it with betadine solution. Gave her a tab of bute in her grain, and went very carefully around her stall, where I found THREE nails sticking out at leg level! They'd been hammered in from the outside, so we're talking about rusty points, not nail heads. I removed what I could, and covered one impossible nail with a gob of duct tape. I am so angry I could spit. Nobody better tell me she got this kicking her stall. Physically impossible to puncture the very center of the leg below the hock while kicking. She must have just backed into it. She was just looking so much better! I can't even imagine what this insult will do to the already stressed soft tissue in that leg. I'll get an antibiotic first thing tomorrow morning. Her tetanus is current. She's not acting lame, but she is so ridiculously stoic. I want to move her NOW!

That just sucks!! Nails hammered in from the outside should have been bent so they were not sticking out. That is such a dangerous situation. I couldn't imagine what else could have happened with the nails sticking out. Thankfully they were not eye level. I feel for you, poor Cypress can't get a break.

More importantly, nails that long should never have been used. Hope this injury doesn't complicate anything and that your move to the other barn happens soon.

Oh how horrible, poor Cypress. Jasper sends whinnies and slobbers to his latest pin-up girl. :horsie: Hope she's back in action soon!

I hope you can get a stall at the Riding Centre soon, this is RIDICULOUS! Poor Cypress, and a PUNCTURE wound is no picnic.... better get the antibiotics - there goes the vet bill higher... I just can't imagine doing any kind of stall repair that involves pounding loose nails tighter, without then at least LOOKING to see if I've pounded something straight through the wood into the stall! The most dangerous, asking-for-an-accident, thing someone could do! My husband put a huge carriage bolt through a 12x12 post attached to Teddy's stall, in order to hang a big gate there...well, the bolt went through his stall about one inch, and I made him take it out and replace it facing the other way, with the smooth head of the bolt on Teddy's side, and the bolt end sticking out into the aisle, where I then did the duct tape thing on THAT side! My gosh, do WE have to think of EVERYTHING?

This morning, and I am NOT MAKING THIS UP, she has another scrape on the other hock! Obviously my furious nail ripping last night didn't solve the problem. She's actually kept in a different stall during the day, and I hadn't inspected it last night because there was another horse in it at the time. But sure enough, I went around the walls, and there in the corner were several rusty nail points, one was the perfect height for the damage I'm seeing. To be fair, some of these nails had apparently been pounded into support posts at one time, but over the years a cribbing horse has apparently chewed the wood away, exposing the nails. (Imagine that poor beast's lips and gums when it found the nail points!)
At least so far, this puncture injury looks like it will heal without much trouble, but I'm glad we're up-to-date on tetanus, and I'll pick up some antibiotics today, too, just to be sure. I am still breathing fire but the barn owners were not anywhere to be seen when I went out this morning, so they haven't yet enjoyed hearing my opinion about this.
As for moving her? The opening at the RC I had anticipated doesn't seem to be happening anytime soon, but I stopped this morning and told my sorry tale. There MAY be a smaller stall available this spring. And she'd be turned out in a huge grassy pasture with all mares and one monster draft gelding who loves his harem. I think that would be fine.

Did you tell anyone at the barn about this? Poor Cypress. I hope it will heal with no complications. I don't like puncture wounds.
Today I am inspecting Charm's stall, too! I've noticed some of the boards are getting un-nailed...thanks for the heads up, and best recovery to Cypress1

Bluddy 'ell. The poor Babe. Have you confronted anyone?
Do you sign anything over there when you place your horses? We don't - and it's stupid.
Please tell The Babe that her personal 'Forr-Claude Vandamme' is coming over to 'sort out' the **** who's hurt his 'dame'.

Oh, injury or not, The Babe is TOTALLY in the mood for alittle male attention! This would be a marvelous time for her movie star boyfriend to make an appearance! I swear, she's so intoxicated by hormones right now she feels no pain whatsoever! By morning, all four legs may be tattered, but she'll just gaze stupidly at the boys, oblivious to all else. This too shall pass, though, so tell Forry to take a fast plane.
