Pooh. I wrote a 'diatribe' earlier, which - with my usual skill, has disappeared into cyberspace. But this is serious.
I was watching the Iraqi troops surrendering on TV an hour or two ago. All I could ACTUALLY see, was 2 teeny, tiny donks, pulling a payload of weapons, people, equipment. They were cantering. They were skinny. They were tired. They were willing. Their load was unbelievable.
Christi - Keely? I know we're not political. But would you help me get something together for animals in warzones? I don't have money. I don't really (!!) have time. I'm not sure I even have ideas. But I'll co-ordinate and run any initiative we can get together.
Please, everyone? It's breaking my heart. B

Somewhere I saw a brief article about zoos in Baghdad. I guess there were one or two phenomenal zoos there until sanctions. So the animals had been suffering already and of course now their keepers may not be attending to them much at all. Caged and starving--what a horrible image. Two Iraqi zookeepers were interviewed for the article--one said of course, he would take up his gun and fight, the other said he woud stay and feed the animals as long as he could. No matter your politics, think how horrible it would be to have to abandon your animals in any kind of crisis. Sorry! I am always susceptible to these frightful images! But, yes, something to draw attention to the problem, to do something helpful....I'd be interested!

There is an organization that is out there.... I will have to find the name. It is an equine rescue that was working overseas for the horses and donkeys in that area.... I will have to try to find it on the net.

Yes, do let us know if there is some way we can help. I remember that some sort of organization helped the equines in Bosnia...

Keely might still have the link for a place she mentioned on the old board a couple of years ago. I sent money to help horses in Pakistan at that time. I've had my links go down the tube with the old hard drive on one of the old computers. You could try a search for international horse rescue or something like that.

Thanks everyone. I'll go on-line and see what I can find. Even if we each contribute $1 or £1. ClaireLV .. do the Brooks hospital people do anything for abandoned animals in these places? Or the ILPH? I'll go and have a look.
I'm wary of donations to the big charities. I don't think any of us want to support anyone's advertising campaign. But maybe Christi could set up a second kitty and we just do what we can. That way we can help where we really want to, without politics mattering.

The first organization I would check is EARS, Emergency Animal Rescue Service, to see if they are doing any work in Iraq. They may plan to go in afterwards to help. And if they aren't just yet, they are still a WONDERFUL organization, helping animals in the aftermath of disaster. Here's a link: www.uan.org/ears/I'll check it out more when I get home...Gotta run some errands while Nathan is napping and Mark is home to watch him. Christi
