Monday 9am is D day. His friends have been coming around all week long and giving him lots of treats so he's in great spirits. They're all giving me a bit of a hard time as they think he looks really content and I should leave him be. I know he'll go downhill in the heat of summer so am not backing down at this stage.

Quite right. You've made the decision which you believe is right for him - and only you know him. It doesn't help to have that hard decision questioned by the 'well-meaning'.
I'm sad for you and will be thinking of you both.

Oh Vida, I had hoped it would not come to this, Augie has made such great improvements since you got him. I know that you have improved his quality of life so much. Please give him a hug for me, and tell him his christmas card pic is still in my window sill.....love you augie
