So I have a little free time this afternoon, and I am hanging out at the barn. Decide to give Adair a good session with the shedding blade, as he is the first to start this spring. (Yonkie is apparently still on Ohio time) So I am zoning out and giving the arms a good workout, and Adair is zoning out and going "oooh yeah!" and I am getting ankle deep in red hair ---- wait a minute -- red hair ---double take -- my horse is not red now - (taking a moment to make sure I am still grooming same horse) - Yep, same horse! For a brief moment I could not help but wonder if I had become overzealous and removed all his hair down to his skin - but, upon closer examination, my boy has grown in a lovely new shiny dappled coat underneath of dark bay. He is now practically the same color as Yonkie! (Who is no telling what under HER hair - I am afraid to start on her and find out!) I guess this is a good thing - from all the sunflower seed and improved nutrition since I got him?

Hahaha you turned him black using black oil sunnies ;D
Just kidding, but that's funny! I'm going to trudge through 5 foot snow drift to try the slicker brush out on Porter and Nate. BTW, it's 45 degrees here. Colorado's weather is on crack!

LOL Shannon, I just had the same thought when grooming Charm. Underneath all her winter hair, she seems to be very dark! All the hair in the curry comb is a dull plain brown, but her neck is almost all shed out and almost black. I LIKE that!
My Morgan used to be a plain red chestnut in the winter, but would shed out a lovely liver chestnut. One year tho, she shed in patches, she looked awful!

So...I'm confused! Is he red? Black? Dappled Bay? Or if someone asks, do you reply like Tiger Woods and say he's a "red dappled black bay."? Maybe he's just trying out a new hairstyle - we all need a change once in a while.

Christina thats so funny! Perhaps he is just trying out a new look Shannon! BTW hows the new barn working out, and any news of the old barn? They were worse than my lawnchair people! I promised SMay I would get pictures one day! Probably be out there as soon as they notice a new horse in my barn, but it might take them a while to notice its not the same dark bay horse! Especially since one of them thought Jasper the typically leggy fine featured TB was a STB, even worse we were riding along right next to my friends typically chunky hunky STB at the time! Huh!?

I always look forward to spring so much cause Teddy sheds out blacker than ever and his spring fur is so shiny. His winter fur is black, but permanently dusty, so he just seems darker when that short coat comes in! Black horses are the hardest thing to clean aside of WHITE horses... hahaha
