anybody? I'm not much of a landscaper but I have some areas to spruce up and ornamental grasses seemed like an idea (I don't know one kind from another yet) but anybody know if theyare toxic or pointless cause the horses will just find them and consume them? I fully realize how silly this question is

Be careful: some do develop toxins, but most of those do not grow in areas where there is winter. What is more problem with ornamental grasses is they are invasive, nothing like having a whole yard full of whatever you started with, and it takes over your whole lawn - downy brome grass does NOT make a nice lawn, and it is commonly sold as ornamental. If someone tries to sell you squirrel tail grass, do NOT bite, it is common green foxtail, and, while very interesting to horses when young and green, the beards are nasty things that burrow into tongues, lips and gums. Sheep fescue, while pretty will take over the yard, but is harmless, as are most native grass types. I will get back to you with some save, non-invasive types, IF I can find my old suppliers on line.

Let me do a little research this afternoon. There are some ornamental grasses that are sterile cultivars and shouldn't invade everything but I need to check about toxicity. Also, I don't know if the horses will eat them or not but deer typically stay away.

Y'all are SO SMART! Thanks for that info and those sites. Did I miss a discussion on pasture seeding? I seem to remember one in the near past... I am planning to do a few test sections. If I buy a local pasture mix, it oughta be right, oughta it? What should I look for in a pasture mix? ( seed type)

For your pasture, smay, check with local ag office and see what they say, but pasture mix formulated for your area should work just fine.
