Niaru~On a not grey horse, I loff Orvis shampoo. On Nate I do the Orvis first, the Quiksilver, let it sit, and rinse. It makes him VERY white, although, I usually have to do 3-4 baths the week before showing starts to get out all the dingy yellow from him.
When we show, in the summer, they get rinsed off with water and then Vetrolin liniment after showing. The morning of showing, they get a bath. At home, I'm pretty uptight about how clean they are, so it's about the same ;D I also keep thier heads and legs clipped all Spring/Fall/Summer.

It's called "Brewer's Yeast" there are some online resources available for the actual breakdown of the product. I know it always ran me about $10 for a 40-50lb. bag. My standardbred was a little bit wormy, tad underweight, and very dirty when i got him. On the advice of a friend I put him on 2oz. per day the 2 1/2 years that I had him. It made a HUGE difference in his coat, hooves, and overall sheen. He never had a bath a day in his life (terrified of water) but shone like a new penny. Whenever he would get nipped in the pasture, the hair would regenerate at a great speed.. didn't take as long as most other horses I'd ever had. And it always re-grew in the same color. I have seen nips come in a different shade in the past. But it helps with digestions, it has a high protein content, but he was "hot" and it almost seemed as though the high amount of "B" vitamins balanced this out. I highly recommend it.

Michelle - have you ever tried, I think it's called Cowboy Magic? They have a shampoo specifically for the urine and manure stains that get on the white horse. I always had it around because of my Paint.

RC yeah, but it doesn't work for me! My friend has a white horse and his white tail is always very white and that's what she uses. I just hate that dingy yellowish color, mostly in his tail. I also try to keep his legs clipped close, it's just easier to get stains out that way.
Have you gotten the white on your paint to shine/glimmer like the coler? My old dark bay fould just glow, but the white on Nate is just white, not shiny. Maybe I'll try the Brewer's yeast too ;D

Michelle, the apple cider vinegar you can buy by the gallon at the store. It's in the same place as the regular vinegar but it's brown. For terrrible flakey flakes if the skin isn't irritated (like on manes), you can just pour it on directly, let stand for a couple of minutes and then rinse off with water. You can do this on your own head too if it gets flakey! If you're not having terrible trouble with flakes, you can dilute it in water for a rinse. It makes the coat really shiney basically because it strips it of all the oils.
In regards to the free choice vit/min, I generally put a little in their food daily just because I have terrible wastage when I offer it free choice as it gets dusty and dirty after awhile. Once I start seeing them drink form sand puddles, licking the ground or chewing the fences (which they've just started), then I offer it free choice and they really chow alot of it at first and then start to waine off after a day or two. Mikhail chows the longest, sometimes for a couple of weeks until he's had his fill and then no longer touches it anymore.

Thanks Vida, Poter's whole body is flaky even with grooming and all the high fat he gets. As soon as it's warm enough to wash I'm going to try the apple cider vinegar ;D

We will? Oh, yes! "Brewers" use this yeast to make beer, right? When should we begin our experiments? Not to worry. SMay will drive.

SMay, I noticed in the camp-o-ree string, that you're having your mobile home delivered to the horse park. So...think your hired driver will take us from laboratory to laboratory?

Okay, I'm sure that this has been asked before, and it's prob a stupid question, but...with the black oil sunflower seeds - do you feed them with the hulls on? Or shelled?

Shells on! For sure. But I've just started this recently after all the seed testimonials on this board. Cypress loves them! (We need a chewing smiley face for posts like this! ;D )
