Would you consider breeding an older mare? My older mare early 20s is well bred racing/performance appy/QH cross.... she moves well and is in excellent health..... I earned a breeding from an awesome stallion that doesn't stand to outside mares... brother to 4th in the nation 2000 open reining champion and grandson to one the nations all-time leading reining sires mr joe glo.... would you consider it?

Is she a maiden? If she is it is not a good choice. If not, When was the last time this mare foaled? the longer it has been the harder it will be to get her pregnant. Does she have any lameness issues that will be aggrivated by the extra weight?
Next you need to have a vet out to perform a breeding soundness exam and "grade" her uterus this will tell you the % chance she has of carrying a foal fullterm. Also the vet will need to see if she is still cycling (this means not JUST showing signs of being in heat but, actually producing breedable follicles that ovualted as expected.
Theses type things should help make your descision. Also it is harder on a older horse (she's like a 70 yr old woman!) alot more can go wrong (uterine tears, prepubic rupture, circulation problems, lameness etc.
Some horses can handle it well, some don't
Speaking from experience it will be alot cheaper to buy a nice bred younger mare that is still in her prime.
Good luck

From the sounds of it, your mare is a maiden and Audrey knows ALL this stuff about both older mares and maiden mares! If you've earned a free breeding from an awesome stallion, why don't you buy a nice OTTB mare and go for it! hahahaha I'm no help!

Thanks Audrey.....You answered my question...yeah those were my concerns..... aging and bring health problems upon her that she would not have if she was not bred. It has been 10 years since her last foal..... carries foals well... we bought her and just used her for a riding horse. No lameness issues.... I talked to the vet and he said to live cover if she takes..... she takes... I am concerned about it causing health issues at her age. I am considering buying Ms. Xena (a little appy girl that hasn't but one spot).... she is two.... I may consider to purchase her and bred her in a few years when she matures.... nice lines... not reining performance but out of a nice hunter style stallion and halter mare. Smart cookie too... knows how to turn on pull lights..
I forgot.... plus I am getting pick of the crop out of the Mr. Joe Glo g-son...... so I will be getting a foal either this year or next.... out of a Money Creek mare.
Oh smay..... have you seen any short legged and short backed mares...... I would consider it! I remember the little one in ohio.... that looked like charm.... she was cute!!!

You could take my broodmare on a lease! She's quite the opposite of short legged and short backed though, LOL! but throws a LOT of the sire. Her last foal was a buckskin paint. She had to squat down for the stallion!

Sue, I do know where you could get some nice Appy broodmares. hehehehe. Anything to help. Rosie is a few spot Appy and you know what that means. Her sire has certificates in Reining and Heeling. She has a full sister Cameo (my favorite) is a buckskin leopard Appy, real cute $2,500. OK, they do have others, but these are my favorites. ;D They are only selling these horses as they are getting out of the breeding business with the plans to retire down in Kentucky next year. Though a few mares, ones that aren't sound due to old injuries and their old stud are going with them.

Oh Zenrider...... tell me more...... very curious....on lines.....looking for as much King (QH) in pedigree.... your friend mare's papa has reining pedigree??.... and team penning..... cool... I never did get to go try the team penning stuff. $2500 is what I was going to offer for Xena... originally they wanted $5000.... she dropped the price now will take offers.... she will roan and have spots within the year.

Will get as much info as I can about breeding specifics. I am pretty sure there is Impressive in there as their stud goes by the name Impresso. No HYPP problems though. And the sweetest stud ever. OK, he does have some attitude, but is very controlled about it. He actually looks a lot like the Appaloosa stud John Lyons used to travel with. The heeling is somebody roped off him. (Team Roping) Though not like rodeo, more of a judged thing from what I understand. Though I'm sure he could have team penned too, if that had been more popular back when they were still showing him. He's a neat stud. Though he'd rather have his butt scratched then his face petted. LOL

Thanks Zenrider opps!!! I should be paying better attention.... I knew heading and heeling was roping...... duhhhh! I think my head was somewhere it shouldn't have been... I guess kids do that to you when you worry about them... towhead has been located in LA... Yeah Impresso is Impressive g-son.... out of Bright Candy mare... I am assuming Bright Eyes Brother lines.. hummmm he has a ROM in reining....

Sue many factors come into play here. She's in good health but would this be her first?
My experience has been this: with a vet's OK, we successfully bred a TB mare at 20, her first, and she had 2 nice foals, one at 20 and one at 22. Whiskey, my Arab, was bred for the first time at 18. She had 2 foals, and up until she was 22, was bred again, but it was stillborn.
I would consider what a vet would say if you really REALLY want to try this. Otherwise, if it were me, I would reconsider.

Thanks Shelby, my husband and I talked about it and we don't want to risk her health... I have a baby coming this year or next...I earned the baby and I would like a filly but it isn't born yet so it may be a colt....... so I have my hands full or wait for a filly over next few years.... I have looked a couple of young mares to replace my older mare for breeding... I think this is the wisest choice! Audrey gave me a lot of good points that make a lot of sense... even though Shasta isn't maiden and in good health, I don't want the complications and possibly loose her... plus I have never had any experience with foaling ...here is some pics of her ..... one playing with diego!!! She is the blue roan..
