With the herpes virus. 3 horses in barn 15 came down with it. I didn't hear many more details yet Turfway is in KY, just outside Cincinnatti and about 60 miles from me.....

That's awful. They had an article in this months Horse Illustrated regarding the issue of the virus. It seems as if the issue is being down played, which worries me. If it has spread that far, then there have to be other areas that are not being discussed. It is frightening.

The All Thoroughbred Charity Show might be cancelled or postponed....those quarantine dates are REALLY long lately.... a month after the last horse has been diagnosed....could go on for months with a few horses at one racetrack! That's AWFUL! I am seriously thinking of NOT participating in a couple things cause this scares me a lot...our STB spring clinic ..Equine Affaire with Winny....and even pony club events coming up. Yes, many people including vets are downplaying the spread of this virus. AND..there is NO VACCINATION! I keep hearing people say "vaccinate now to stop the spread." There is NO VACCINE for this.

Wow, one of my favorite horse shows growing up was there! They used to let us gallop on the track and it was sooo much fun! My super fancy leased warmblood Eq horse ran away with me there! I fell off and he kept running around the track!
Turfway Park was a cool place to horse show!!

This is so scary! I hope the other horses will be fine. I've been doing as much reading as possible about this the last month or so. You never quite know what is accurate and what's not...it's not all consistent. Hope they can figure this thing out, soon.

Lynne, is there any media coverage/conformation of this? Not that I don't believe you, I totally do, but is there anywhere to read about this?

Ack. That IS scary. I was just reading an article in PH on EE, EPM, WNV, and this virus. They did confirm that there is no vaccine for the neurological strain of the herpes virus. As for prognosis, it was good unless the horse started lying down. I hated reading this article, because anytime I read about serious illnesses, I tend to see all those symptoms on MY horse!

I am actually thinking of bringing Red home from the barn where horses are still coming and going. I am considering not doing any showing this year...this would have been my first year trying to do green as grass stuff. I have committed myself and Red to one clinic the end of May/first of June.... I could practice this year and just setup a small x/c course at home and dressage arena... What are the rest of you feeling....

I am personally very worried about all of this. I am afraid that it is much bigger than it is being made out to be. In the one article it said there were cases at Penn National and Philadelphia Park. That is getting way too close to home. Geez. Another thing to worry about this year.

I think these are different links than earlier but they confirm it, too: news.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=14658www.kypost.com/2003/03/19/turf031903.htmlI'm certainly going to keep an eye on what's going on. Tango is not somewhere that alot of horses come and go so that's not such a huge worry. I am planning on showing him this spring/summer, although that may change later. I only show at small local shows that we trailer in for and don't have to leave them over night. I'm trying to balance not over-reacting with being selfish and showing, anyway. At the shows, he will not share buckets with any other horses, and I'll limit my contact with "strange" horses as much as possible, if not entirely. Do any of you have insurance on your horses? Tango is by no means a "valuable" horse, at what point does it make sense to get it?

Amy, Rita was insured. After losing a dear mare to colic I decided my next horse would be insured. It's basic coverage for surgery up to $3,000 (I think) and mortality (you get back your horse's value at the time of death). For Charm, I just sent a check for the same type of insurance ($425/year). It has a $200 deductible so it doesn't cover basic vet care, but to me it's piece of mind...although in Rita's case it hasn't helped one bit to save her... Hope this helps. I'm still waiting to hear from them about Rita AND Charm...getting a little nervous...

Thank you niaru. I know depending on what you get it's limited in it's coverage and isn't always going to help. And it will certainly never help with the pain of losing a horse, I would just hate to take that financial hit, too. I think I'll look into it.
Anyone have any specific suggestions or comlaints?

Niaru- Where do you have your insurance through? I think I should look into insuring my beloved Irish.. Just for peace of mind...
