I can't stand them. I swear I have never seen one on or near the property in four years. But now, in teh last week and a half we've seen eight or nine??! And just now I sw one come out of the barn and toddle off. I thought it was my cat Beenny at first and something was wrong with him (bad thing about to happen) so I took down there after him. I didn't get close enough but the dogs did. Oddly I never smelled anything but darned if that little (and it looked little) critter didnt take off after the dogs! Okay, so how do you get rid of skunks and what's the myriad of horse diseases they carry besides rabies Does Tuchas have it? Are they all gonna get it? :bang: :bang: :curse: :curse: :curse: skunks!

Traps. You can use humane traps, but then you have to have someone come take them away. I've heard if you throw a blanket over the cage, they won't spray because they can't see you. But I don't want to test the theory!

Several choices to eradicate them: 1) shoot'em; 2) hire someone to shoot'em; 3) get the local pest control person to trap or shoot them; 4) trap them, and have the pest control person remove them. Before anyone thinks I am bloodthirsty here, in my area nuisance skunks that are live trapped must be destroyed and tested for rabies. therefore, our logic here (since we are under rabies watch again/still) is to shoot'em and call The Rat Man (pest control), who, enrobed in assorted disposable garb, and armed with a shovel, and many garbage bags, and a special ice chest, removes the offending critter and ships it off. If anyone around here cannot shoot straight, we call the Rat Man and he shoots them and sends them off. It is the time of year for late fall- or early winter-born kits to be following mamma around, whilst mamma goes hunting for a new boyfriend; therefore sightings of a 'herd' of stinkers is not uncommon. Other than rabies, I can think of nothing else skunks carry, but they ARE destructive things, nearly as bad as a 'coon. now where is that nose-holding smily guy? ?

They will amaze! They will astound! They will stink! ;D
Worst thing about skunks is the smell. If you make a lot of noise before they get too close and they will actually run away.
With a little luck your skunk was just passing through.

My parents had chickens out on the farm growing up and a skunk got in one night and almost wiped them all out. It's kind of freaky because they bite them in the neck and it looks like vampires got them. Seriously!!
Stock up on tomato sauce in case the dogs get sprayed.
They could be hanging out for 2 reasons- mating season and they've found a source of food.
I've also heard they will kill kittens, so be careful if you have any little ones around.
