A North Carolina milling company has recalled some of its horse feed due to possible Rumensin contamination.
Rumensin is the trade name of monensin, a drug used to prevent parasitic disease and increase milk production in cows and goats. In horses, however, monensin is known to cause illness, sometimes resulting in death.
Bartlett Milling Co. said in an Oct. 31 written statement that it had recalled 50-pound bags of Bartlett Pasture Horse 10 Feed (lot number 288) and 50-pound bags of Cleveland Carolina Champion Horse Feed (lot number 288).
Bartlett spokeswoman Julie Salley said the recalled products were distributed to consumers and retailers in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
Bartlett's statement said all the recalled products were packaged in typical brand-specific feed bags. Lot numbers are printed on the front and back of each bag, the statement said.
The statement said Bartlett has contacted retailers about the recall and instructed them to immediately withdraw those products from sale. Retailers were also instructed to contact consumers who had already purchased the products. Consumers were instructed to stop using the recalled products and to return any unused portions to the retailer, the statement said.
Consumers with questions about the recall should contact Bartlett by calling 800/438-6061 or 336/655-1840, the statement said.
