Have a favorite?? a favorite in the oaks? I like Ria Antonia. Haven't decided for the Derby, although Vicar's in Trouble with Rosie up looks good.

So how'd you do Truth. I had two of the first 4, almost three. California Chrome and Danza. My other two were Samraat and Chitu. Though if I were going to bet them I'd have wanted the second place horse. He paid the best on a place and show bet.

California Chrome had a great story going until the owner turned out to be a sore loser. I understand his frustration, but why should horses in the future have it easier then all the previous Triple Crown winners? BTW, Man 0 War only ran in the Preakness and Belmont, does that make him a lesser horse? The only two horses to run in all three races in 1973 was Secretariat and Sham, which besides Big Red's phenomenal run that day, it makes his victory that much more impressive as he was running against a field of largely 'fresh' horses. Chrome's owner needs to get over it, not just for his own self, but for racing. He's got a great horse, but when I watched the Derby I didn't really think he was going to win the longer Belmont. Even though he didn't look like he was handling the track well that day, seemed stiff, not really reaching with his stride and still hung on for a forth place dead heat. The colt has class, the owner not-so-much. BTW his threat to only run horses in the Derby, thus thwarting any future triple crowns, only works if his horse wins every time.

I have had a HELL of a time getting into this site. Had to change my password TWICE...grrrrrrrrrr.
anyway, It's too bad about Chrome missing out on the triple. I'M STILL trying to get over Smarty missing. At least now that he's back in PA I can see often. He's only 50 miles from me, although shortly he'll be a LOT further. Commuting to Uraguay....... storm's coming up. gotta get the horses.
ok. sun's coming out....and thundering??? hmmmm
It is too bad Coburn said the things he said...at least publicly. Behind closed doors....oh well. There was a lot more behind Chrome winning the triple crown, than the triple crown. He was breeder, owner, with a little known trainer (at least outside of CA). He was a 'little guy' making it big and showing those BIG guys you don't need a lot of money. It was putting CA on the list of top horses....you don't need a high priced KY stallion to get a winner. And he was getting a lot of attention. It had to have been a terrible blow to not win. Chrome ran a decent race under the conditions he was under. Didn't know he had been injured at the start of the race. And he was tired. It was a grueling campaign for him.
I was REALLY interested in the Ogden Phipps, which they have NOT talked about. The Princess (Princess of Sylmar) was running she missed first by a whisker. It was a terrific field with the Princess, Close Hatches (winner) and Beholder (I think 4th). POS is a PA horse. She is doing really well. Hope she has a successful campaign this year. It would be great to see a Princess/Smarty match. just playing equine cupid.........

Coburn's larger problem was starting to believe the hype and see the Disney movie and well perhaps the 'easy' money his horse was bringing him. Though he likely still will if they take care of him. Pick the right races Chrome will likely be horse of the year.
Chrome's a good colt, but when you watch the finishes of the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, both races he's peaked out and horses are making ground on him. So I only made a place bet on him as I figured he'd get caught. Another year of lots of good horses, but no one really stood out as special. Though perhaps the Curlin colt could have, but they raced the shit out of him as a 2yo and the inconsistencies in his races make it more likely they are juggling chemical cocktails to race him instead of concentrating on good ol' conditioning and nutrition. As for Chrome, I think if they stick with races between a mile and a mile and a quarter, perhaps switch to the turf, with Chrome he'll be hard to beat.
