Washington, IL was the worst hit, as far as I've seen, but Diamond/Coal City is closer to home. Neighboring towns that is and the parents live in that area with their horses. They had a subdivision with lots of damage and several businesses knocked down, including a restaurant, a church, a RV business, and my favorite place to get diesel. A few injuries, but thankfully no fatalities. School is out tomorrow due to many of the roads may not be open yet and all but 5 buses are out of order due to the tornado. Just crazy. Just glad my parents place is fine and more so that they are directly under the tornado siren, so can't miss a warning. Unlike me, where I can barely hear mine. OK, and they actually at least have a crawl space they can get into with the dogs. The larger worry at these times is for the horses. www.morrisdailyherald.com/2013/11/17/diamond-coal-city-damaged-by-tornado/arbrdck/

We just got wind and rain, but I had radio, blankets and flashlights in the bathtub, just in case.

I was worried about you to Zen. Jenarby is okay, but had tornadoes all around her. WOW, a total of 81 tornadoes yesterday!!

Yup, Ad, the bathtub thing is about all I have for protection as well. Just glad I hadn't taken my camper to the RV place for some maintenance like I almost did this weekend. Glad everyone is OK. I saw there was one near Columbus, so hoping SMay checks in too.

Oh so glad you are all ok. I have seen the damages on the tv this morning. Not sure I could live in a area that had tornado's. Earthquakes are easier

Hey, at least all the leaves are off the trees now, so people can stop smoking up the neighborhood burning them. Everyplace has it's things. However, as we keep building more and more in these areas, there will be more and more houses being hit by tornadoes. These areas have always had them, but things were more spread out, thus they passed more then they hit. As we build more and more into the tornado areas, the more will get hit by tornadoes. Then again, just because ones house is a hundred years old or older, doesn't mean it can't get hit by a tornado, but people in the older houses sometimes get complacent and start to believe that. Which is likely what happened with the elderly brother and sister that were killed in southern Illinois. Sadly, everyplace has it's things, be it hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding in general, fires, earthquakes and even for some in the world, volcanoes. At least we pretty much just have tornadoes and this should be it until next spring/early summer.

GOOD TO HEAR YOU'RE OK ZEN. This is REALLY LATE in the year for tornadoes. They're the storm of the spring/early summer. Didn't get much sleep last night because the weather service kept breaking in with storm warnings ALL NIGHT. It's REALLY windy here - straight line winds. Really annoying. Tornadoes aren't unheard of here. Lancaster/Lebanon counties get them. Years ago my dressage instructor was hit. did lots of damage to the barn. here's hoping there will be NO MORE!
TAKE CARE!

Naw, we didn't have any tornados. It appears that after wrecking Illinois, and damaging Indiana, they kind of wimped out by the time they got to Ohio. We had some wind, some rain, all lasting about 10 minutes, max.

Good to hear you guys are ok! Tornadoes are so unpredictable and scary. But I don't know that earthquakes are much better, Brooks!
We haven't had any big storms/hurricanes here. Crossing fingers that it stays that way.

Thanks Truth. Last time we had storms this near I was somewhere else. SMay, next time we'll try harder to save some of the 'real' storm for you. Yup crazy stuff Niaru, and I'm with you, tornadoes are hit or miss, whereas earthquakes pretty much can nail a much larger definite area.

Why would you be safe in the bath?

Why would you be safe in the bath? Bathrooms and sometimes interior closets (such as this man and his daugher Josie took shelter in), being smaller rooms often (sadly not always) hold up better then the rest of the house. The bathtub affords some protection, especially if you cover yourself with heavy blankets and hold onto them. There have actually been people who's bathtub was blown out of the house, with them in it, that survived. Those are quite the stories. Never been in a tornado, although living in Columbus used to hear LOTS of sirens in the spring. Have been in typhoons. And just like tornadoes they sound like a train coming. Did you see this video of a guy riding the tornado out in a horse stall? www.youtube.com/watch?v=TchJGa9lxXQ
