Well, I have taken one or two classes or workshops each semester for several years, and the end is in sight! Course work is done and my research project proposal has been revised and submitted. Assuming all goes well, I'll finish everything by April (with a 3.97 GPA. Darn that A- the very first semester!) I am not sure it has been worth it. Despite a partial tuition reimbursement, I've spent some money on this. I'll have a very modest raise upon completion of the degree--the sort of thing we used to see in cost of living adjustments. And thanks to my age and leadership in the bargaining unit, I'm an unlikely candidate for promotion. (No successful contract negotiation goes unpunished! ) So, I'm working on gratitude for the intangibles, as they say: Pleasant workplace, nice coworkers, serving my own community, surrounded by books, organizational mission I embrace, 1-mile commute, fine-exempt status! (Except for the $1.80 I owe for that late Interlibrary Loan item! ) I should have done this 30 years ago, for professional reasons. Oh, well. In those days, I was living a different life.

At least you can say you did it, and did it well!!! Had you not attempted going above, and beyond, a little piece of you would always wonder what if. So even though you are not going to see great financial gains, there is personal growth?

Yeah, but you love it and who knows what the future will bring. I'm a big fan of education. At least you weren't a package car driver for the last near 13 years. Driving the big trucks, once you get used to the size issues, is a much better job. I'll tell you, if cleaning stalls would pay my bills, I'd do that.
