Just heard from my daughter. She's in Banff for the Banff Mountain Film Festival. She says they have no cell phone reception and Canadians put gravy on French fries. Big Tee, what's that about!?

Cell reception in Banff??? Hell no, you can't even get radio and TV reception in the mountains without a dish = air to receiver equipment just doesn't work in mountains or even high hills but satellite to ground stuff mostly works. There used to be signs saying no reception along the highway. The townsite is in a bowl, completely surrounded by mountains except for the pass leading to the town.
Gravy on fries is good but if they add cheese, it becomes inedible. She may have also noted that older restaurants don't put salt on fries but gravy is optional and you can even have it on the side.
Your daughter better have winter wear and tire chains - it's snowing heavily in many areas of Alberta

An old friend of Tee's. www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3m7ckGhnsc"Think I'll go on to Alberta - weather's good there in the Fall.." MTS : Well, I'm sorry. I can't find a Banff song. Alberta was mentioned.

Gravy and fries? You mean poutine, surely? It's actually pretty good when it's home made! We have friends from Quebec who cooked poutine for us (we also had marinated moose on apple sauce another day-yum!) and it was (surprisingly) delicious! Especially great in winter when it's freezing out. www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzNqh7vF2Rg

Chips and gravy have been a western thing for decades - nothing tops real, hand cut chips better than a nice gravy and gravy hides the nastiness of frozen fries. We never even heard of poutine until the last several years. Poutine has cheese curds in it - EEEEWWWWWWW I like cheese and I like chips and gravy but not mixed together
Bara - I think both Lightfoot and Ray Griff mentioned Banff in a song or two.

Snowing in Alberta!? Imagine that. Well, Carolyn tends to travel light, so I suspect she is shopping for boots right now. I have not had a real supper this evening, so potatoes and gravy in any form begins to sound excellent.

Yeah, fries and gravy may sound strange, but nothing is stranger then putting mayonnaise on a hamburger.

French fries with gravy are very popular (and YUMMY!) in NY too, but I agree with Tee. Cheese added is just gross...
And Zen, what do you think the special sauce on a Whopper is?

Didn't know Whopper's had a secret sauce. As for Big Mac's it's basically Thousand Islands dressing. Doesn't really matter, I usually just get a cheeseburger or double cheeseburger anyway.

Oh that looks FOUL! (Claire, I thought Poutine meant something rude. Am I thinking of something else?)
Tee - prove it! Where are the Banff songs; Carolyn needs to know?! What the dickens rhymes with Banff?

LOL Bara! You're thinking of something else with a different spelling and pronunciation and yes, THAT is rude. Unless you're thinking of the Russian head of state...?! That's too funny, the reaction "when cheese is added, ewwww"! I thought Americans added cheese to just about anything. Melted on broccoli, grated on salads, stuffed/melted/grated into pizzas, etc. etc. I guess cheese on fries is a big no-no here then? But not in potatoes au gratin? Interesting!
Last night, we had shrimp/crab/grapefruit/avocado salad with home-made mayo....(ducking for cover)
(we should have a thread with foods that are weird / disgusting to each of us...!!)
