The irony, just shows you that running away from your problems just causes more problems.
Definitely a complex situation. It would seem he was a deadbeat dad before he lost his job and chose to disappear.
Even with his issues with being a responsible human being, it's kind of sad that it seems no one really looked that hard for this guy when he first disappeared.
