Now how to I protect them from the cold. They should not be in low 40's or below. Yes I did know that when I bought them but they were so pretty and not that expensive. And I did that, "Oh well I'll think of something" Well now is the time. Problem is the only place to put them is full of my orchids. Other places the cats could and would get to them.

Gorgeous, Brooks! You have the gift with plants. Do you use composted manure with the cacti?

Thanks Ann but I can not take credit, we bought them this way and I have been trying to keep them going. I think I could protect them with a big box over them at night. They really like sandy soil and to be drier. They have special potting soil mixes for the cactus.

Very nice cacti you have there.
Oddly, if you plant them, they may survive better, especially on the nights you cover them, as the roots may freeze faster in the pot then in the ground. Then again, you don't really get too much true freezes (OK, what those of us in the Midwest would consider a real freeze) so you may be just fine with your original plan of cardboard boxes. Especially if you put them on the deck, so they aren't getting as much cold air from under the table.
