A boarder here, she's a retired TB racehorse and broodmare, 21 years old. Sweet, sweet mare. She was a bit colicky on Sunday and sounded very gassy so we gave her Equispazz and banamine. Seemed much better yesterday, but this morning she has horrible diarrhea so the vet is coming to see what's going on. No fever and she's been drinking regularly. Not eating her grain, but she's eating hay. Hopefully nothing major. Keep her in your thoughts please.

Bloodwork came back with low white blood cell count. That, coupled with the diarrhea leads the vet to think that there is some type of infection, whether bacterial or protozoal in the large colon. The plan at this point is to continue the metronidazole and to use the Biosponge again tomorrow if it's necessary. She is also getting low dose banamine and ulcergard for a few more days. Her diarrhea has lessened (at least the frequency) a lot and she did eat some senior feed tonight. She continues to drink which is good.
Vet is leaning away from viral just based on the fact that Daria, who shares the same pasture and is stalled right next to Jenny is showing no symptoms at all. He said an infection in the intestinal tract, especially bacterial, would draw the white blood cells out of the blood and into the area of infection, resulting in a lower count in the blood. He also said they have been seeing more protozoal infections than normal this year, perhaps because of how wet it's been. It could be viral though and so we are keeping a close eye on Daria also. I've been monitoring her temp, manure output, etc, too. So far so good.
This morning there were only two poop piles in Jenny's stall. This is very good considering that yesterday it was about every hour. It's also not projectile anymore, but is still very loose, so I gave her another tube of Biosponge. She definitely feels better, eyes are much brighter and she is doing her usual stall walking in front of her door because she wants to go outside. I told her when I see normal poops we'll think about it, lol.

Well, unfortunately Jenny's slight recovery was short-lived and yesterday afternoon she was back to projectile diarrhea and would not eat or drink anything at all. She also started running a fever. Only 101.5, but she is normally between 98 and 99 so high for her. Axel was back out last night and gave her fluids and also some DMSO which should help with inflammation. That, in combination with some more banamine had her feeling better for awhile, at least long enough to eat about three pounds of senior feed. He started her on oxytet IV once a day and we're continuing with the metronidazole, biosponge and low dose (1/4) banamine. He was back out today to repeat everything and again, she ate after he left so at least the is getting some nutrition. He told me to take her out and hand graze her a few times a day as the grass will be easier to digest. Fever is gone and the diarrhea has at least slowed down so hopefully she will be on the mend soon. Please continue to keep her in your thoughts.

Jenny is much better this morning! We have REAL poop, not just brown puddles all over the stall and she actually nickered for her grain this morning. She didn't eat it all, but the fact that she wanted to eat at all is a MAJOR improvement. Plus, she ate all that I gave her last night and about half of her hay. Her temp is staying down again, no fever since yesterday. I think maybe she's turned the corner. I hope, I hope, I hope!

Good news! It's so stressful when they're not feeling well! I hope Jenny's on the mend for good.
