I did ride again today. But I was sort of a tag-along, and wound up on a big gelding I've ridden just a few times. We were going out to the hunt field, and the gelding herd was just being turned out to graze there. Call me a chicken, but I was bareback, and Monty seemed a little thrilled to see all his friends at liberty. I hopped off and went back to the barn for a saddle! My friends seemed surprised at my caution, but I notice none of them were bareback. Ha! After that, it was just a nice ride. After all those years on a TB mare, it's always surprising to ride a gelding who is actually fine with halting. In fact, volunteers to halt, even before asked! That just never happened with The Babe.

Cool. Hiking in the Grand Tetons today I was thinking a nice level headed trail horse would have been handy.

If I were you I would have saddled up too with your mount Monty acting "thrilled" at seeing his friends. I am happy for you to still be riding even after the Babe's passing. You Go Girl!!

Great to hear you had a nice ride! I did too, rode Charm for all of 20 mn walk-trot-canter-jump, we had to keep moving as the bugs were swarming to us as soon as we walked. Charm has basically had the summer off, and took those jumps like they were nothing.
Nancy and I have been hiking too, Zen, we discovered that trails that have been nicely marked and maintained are accessible from her place, and one can hike for miles on those. Some have tricky spots (a bridge over a creek that is made of flat ledge / rocks with gaps in between, hmmmm wonder what the horses will think of that!) but otherwise they are really nice, with hilly terrain but not too steep. Good hiking!
Now why can't we find REAL maps of that area anywhere. Grumble. Their little brochure with the marked trails is a start, but there are lots of other trails back there and no map to be found.

Niaru, chances are those other trails aren't 'official' trails. Yellowstone had to close an area due to unofficial trails made by, I'm guessing, trail ride places that didn't want to take the long way into the park.
