I am glad I had the total knee surgery. I do still have some pain with the knee, but it is a different kind of pain and I don't need to take pain meds except for once in a while. My range of motion with the new knee has greatly improved. My knee was so badly damaged in the fall I took back in 2008 that it had begun to breakdown and was greatly hyperextened and bowed, plus very unstable. It caused me to fall frequently. For the fact I had a metal plate and screws from the surgeries after my fall my current surgeon had to remove those before he could do the hardware of the knee replacement. My mobility has improved to the point that I don't need to use a cane any longer or anyother walking aid. However, in my case I let the needing the surgery go until I just absolutely had no choice. Therefore, now my right hip, back and left hamstring cause me a lot of discomfort. The physical therapy wasn't that bad at all except only occasionally I would be sore and a slight bit painful the rest of the day. The surgery itself is considered major surgery and does take a while to fully recover. My surgeon at 3 months post op told me I was still in a recovery mode and that was a month ago. At one of my follow-up visits he said he was so pleased with the progress I had made.
I fully understand your apprehension at having the surgery, because I was in the very same frame of mind. I am so glad mine is done and I am on the mend.

I'm glad you are doing better.
I really wasn't to hesitant until I learned I have rheumatoid arthritis a couple months ago. Before it was a case of they are just worn out (which is still the case), but now there is autoimmune inflammation too. My rheumatologist said I will still see relief with the knee replacement. I am going into this surgery with the knowledge that I will probably have to have it done again, before I die. Unless I die in the next 10-15 years. I am excited to be able to exercise without so much pain!!!
