My silly, eccentric old Cooper had a horrible bout of colic on July 28th in the morning. He was down and groaning and thrashing. His gums were pale. The vet was out within 30 minutes and gave him 20cc of Banamine IV. It didn't touch the pain. The vet did a rectal and believed he felt some kind of "constriction" in his words. At Cooper's old age (easily 25+) and the type of colic, surgery was not an option so I let him go.
I bought Cooper from Michelle (has she been on here lately?) in 2007 or so. He was part of that group she and Heidi brought in from Sam at CBER. I tagged along with a friend who was horse shopping and went to see Michelle and Heidi's horses. Michelle rode Cooper (named Drifter) and said she didn't really care for him, lol. I thought he was beautiful. A few weeks or months later (can't remember), Michelle called and said that she needed to move him out and was I interested. The price was good so I had him vetted and brought him home.
I enjoyed riding him but 2008 was a horrible year in many ways and I quit riding. Cooper was spooky and grouchy with most people, but he was my bud. The papers that came with him said he was 13. My vet, at the vet check, made a concerned face when I told her the age he was supposed to be but she said that aging by teeth isn't an exact science.
At his last floating, my vet said there is no way Cooper is less than 25 and quite possibly much older. I didn't care. I loved the way his neigh sounded like an old car trying to start on a cold morning. And I loved how Mr. Poopers would snort at everything from cell phones to cameras to flashlights. My DH called him Buck Snort.
I'm grateful that we were home that morning. We were supposed to be out of town that weekend but had one roadblock after another so changed our plans. Guess things sometimes happen for a reason.
I only have a few pictures of him because he was scared of cameras (see above)
This is the business picture I use:

I will really miss that old guy. Rest in peace Alley Oop Coop.
