I have gotten very engrossed in the American Civil War(1840's) and how the States of Oklahoma, Kansas and Arkansas were impacted in the battles. There is far more history of the Civil War in this area than I ever realized. I have ordered 9 books so far on the subject. I have read 4 so far and on the fifth one now. The last three I just ordered. What I have found is that within an hours drive in either direction of were I live there are historial battle sites and Forts that no longer exist, but are on the National Historical Registery. Of special interest to me is the participation of American Indians who fought for the Confederacy. Max and I have taken some day road trips to see the cemeteries and battle sites. What an adventure it is to research history.

I love history and here is pretty history rich as well - we have the badlands SW of me, a hideout for many old bad guys including Butch Cassidy and this place was better known than the infamous Robbers' Roost and others as it was not policed at all. We can likely lay claim to more locations that can legitimately proclaim 'Sitting Bull Slept Here' than New England can claim for George Washington. There is a lot of connected history between the two countries here in the West, and the borderlands in particular - border was patroled by both NWMP and US Cavalry, assorted divisions.

I been thinking about a more or less obscure part of the Civil War for you to look into - Quantrill's Raiders. Took me all afternoon to come up with that name!!!LOL

Fascinating period, Deb. I have a book called 'Traveller' by Richard Adams (Watership Down). It's from the point of view of Robert E Lee's horse (Traveller) - much like 'Black Beauty' but in the Civil War.
I'm ashamed to say, Tee, I know NOTHING of Canadian history, despite having lived there for a short few years.

Big Tee, I already had some knowledge of Quantrill's Raiders before I started researching the subject. Something I have found out is that less than an hours drive into Kansas Quantrill was involved in a Massacre of Union soldiers at what is now Baxter Springs, Kansas. I reckon I have developed a passion for delving into the history of the Civil War Era.
