Last Memorial Day weekend we had a leaking pipe that was fixed. We now have this mystery plant that has grow up at that spot. Now remember I live in CA. I don't have a clue as to what it is. Leaves are very green and very thin and very shiny. It has many "branches" or stocks coming from the same spot. OK what is it?

That's what I think too. Which means we have to dig it out We do have Cottonwoods near by.

Well if you have cottonwoods/river poplars, that is what it is. Cut it off, leave some stem, hollow it out a bit and give it a drink of some kind of weed killer, digging may well mean more digging than you anticipate - it may be a sucker and you can dig for 300 feet.

It does look like a poplar leaf. Too bad you have to kill it, but it's way too close to the house. We have the same problem here at my parents' house. A little cedar tree decided to grow about 2 meters from the garage door. That is a no go, these trees get huge. And it's too big now to move somewhere else. It's a shame. It's a beautiful tree and I hate killing it. Sigh.

Me too But that it where the water main is for the house and it is too close. I wish I could just move it.

You could try moving it. Depends on how much root you can get out. It will require frequent deep watering to survive the shock of the move.
