Came home to find Cypress looking worse than when I left. The leg had been getting a tiny bit better looking, at least no worse. But I've been away since Thursday, and when I went out this morning I found the leg stocked up from the hock down. I walked her a bit, and that helped reduce any swelling that came from just standing in her stall for so long. Unfortunately, I could then see that the swelling in the injury area has changed. It's squishier and shaped differently. She still shows no signs of lameness! walks like a queen! Also, there's a patch of what looks like rain rot right on the affected area! What fresh hell is this!?! I asked my friend to continue the bute while I was gone and to walk her just a little if possible. Somehow this got all garbled and I'm not sure that she got her bute regularly or that she was walked much at all. By the way, in asking my friend to help with the bute, I've inadvertently triggered a barn debate. I've been giving her two tabs at a time, once a day. (It's one tab per 500 lbs of horse). Now I'm hearing from others at the barn that I should be giving one tab in the morning and one at night. Doesn't that just dilute the dosage? What do you all do?

The swelling might just be that she hasn't moved enough. It's a good sign that she isn't lame on it.
As for the bute, I usually give the dose at once, like you. Let us know what the vet says! Poor you, your horse, your daughter...ack.

Oh gosh, Ad. If its not one thing....UG. Sounds like you have really been through the wringer lately. And poor Cypress. Hopefully the vet will be able to get things back on the "up and better". As far as the bute, I have always been advised by my vet that EITHER way is fine. For me ti depends on the ailment and the lameness or pain associated with it. The farrier was out yesterdaya dntwo of my horses are lame (is THAT supposed to happen? Hee hee...one is my navicular horse and the other is barefoot for the first time) Anyway, for my horse with navicular I gave him on tablet last night and one this morning because the pain wasn't SEVERE and I wanted to spread it out a bit. When Cobie blew up on all four legs for no known reason we put him on two simultaneously. I know that doesn't help at all but, at least you know I'm right there with ya Good luck and keep us posted. ANd SOMETIME get some rest and relaxation! Its an order.

Oh dear, poor Cypress! Sending hugs to you both. Ad - you must be exhausted with all this going on. I give the bute all at once too.

And oh dear, poor Ad. What a horrible time you're having. It has to be good news that she's walking well and showing no signs of pain or lameness - particularly as you suspect she hasn't had the Bute.
I'll have a look in my vet book tomorrow (it's in the office) but by then, hopefully, the real vet will have been to see her. Very odd combination of symptoms.
How's Carolyn?

Oh, you are all so sweet, but be careful because you are appealing to my monumental sense of self pity! See...it's like this! I am SO riding deprived. Grooming a stinky, unridable horse is just not therapeutic enough. I weep. I suffer.

Oh poo! Usually squishy swelling is in the skin layers, like a skin infection or lymphangitis. Thinking good thoughts for you and Cypress. And Carambi sends her a wink (he thinks he's such a stud )
