There is a very nice lady called Issy, who is upset about your experience. She has asked me to ask you about Alabama . No names, no pack drill. I'm really after the Sea Shepherds. And then what? What can I do up here in Shetland - close to the action? I'm no activist.
Anyway, RR, here's what Issy is asking you. Oh fiddle!
Ok let’s clear something up – you aren’t picking on me and I am neither young nor idealistic – 43 and been here 13 years, I am simply trying to be diplomatic and sort this out for you. Ok – this sounds like a situation from a wild west film and is completely against anything I understand of Greenpeace, have witnessed or have ever heard of. We are a non-violent organisation committed to direct action to help protect the environment.
I have no idea who it was who was firing at her and claiming they were from Greenpeace, but I can assure you it would not have been an official GP representative. I think and I say in this in the strongest terms she must contact the office there and have a chat with them. She is obviously very distressed and upset by all this and rightly so by the sounds of it. But sure it is possible that it was some group saying it was Greenpeace to besmirch our name and hide theirs?
On the other hand maybe I am wrong and it was a strange period in our history – but I seriously doubt that – we take our non-violent direct action very seriously and would not jeopardise it. Bear in mind Greenpeace began in 1971 in Alaska to stop nuclear testing by the US govt so we have a long history of taking action and how to behave and we know violence isn’t the answer – it always supersedes the cause in the end. I have included the US and out International office so they can see these emails as I am now quite concerned about what your friend witnessed and it needs clearing up for her peace of mind and yours.
Please don’t worry about upsetting me – I am a big girl and have been here a long time. But I do want to reassure you and your friend. We are only human but we do always have the right intentions and would never do anything that endangered lives and what you describe sounds so out of kilter I want the teams to see it and investigate for me – I can’t – it wasn’t on UK soil!
Best wishes
