We had our move last Sunday (the 19th). Bones shipped like a star. Did not even break into a sweat. Walked right up into the strange trailer, and was alone for 7 hours. We stopped twice to check if he wanted water, and he was just munching away at hay, did not have a care in the world.
He hopped out of the trailer, with sea legs, took a look around, let out a big sigh, and I walked him into his new stall and paddock. We did a quick tour so he knew where his fence line was, and I turned him loose. He trotted around, "FREEDOM!!!", and then walked straight over and had a huge drink of water, and went over to his hay.
He liked the old mares he shares a fence line with right away. They, of course, were like "who's this energetic chap", and the old one (36+ years old) turned her butt, the less old one (25 years old) pinned her ears but didn't move. The younger mares are across the driveway salivating at this new handsome guy, but he isn't going to be sharing a fence line with them (yet). One of them has had a foal and is known for being VERY male friendly (if you know what I mean).
Got up in the morning, my horse was just hanging out eating his hay like he'd been there his whole life. We let him settle in for the next full day, then I took him for a walk on his 2nd day down the driveway for some grazing. The 25 year old mare neighed for him, so he neighed back and basically dragged me back to her. Silly boy.
He settled right in, and we had him out grazing the next days in his own field, with the girls next to him. He ran the fence line a little when they were out of sight, but he was ok.
I got to ride him twice in his new home, he was a good boy on the trails.
I left today, my mom just called to say that he has been turned out on grass with the 25 year old mare, and they are getting along. He mostly follows her, she gets mad at him, he goes "oh ok", and then walks the other way. Then she walks away and he follows her, and she says go away, and he stops and thinks "hmmm".
He really just wants to be friends with her, but doesn't know how. Poor guy.
Met the new vet, she checked him over, liked what she saw. I wanted to meet her and "introduce" her to him, so she could see what he looks like, and she asked about his various nicks and scratches (he has a part of his cheek missing from surgery a few years ago, etc.).
I feel pretty good about him settling in. It's quieter at my mom's and drier (he gets bad mud fever), and he doesn't have a new friend, but I think he will figure out his new home soon. I miss him already! I love my horse, but at this point in my life, I have to go on and finish school, I can't pass it up, and my mom is the person I trust the most in this world. I told Bones to be nice to his "Grandma", my mom just raised her eyebrow at me.
I am so proud of how he handled this big change in his life. He is a really good boy.
