Finally the last foal for this season has arrived and in a BIG way! At 7:40 tonight, Dragon Beyond delivered a HUMUNGOUS colt. It was a major struggle, but together we got it done. Baby is not only TALL TALL TALL (42" to be exact), but built like a truck and solid as a rock. Couldn't get pics of the birth as I kind of had my hands full. DB appears to have fared better than me. She seems none the worse for wear after resting a bit. I, on the other hand need a long, hot soak and a massage therapist to put my shoulders back where they belong, lol. The only complication once we got the colt out was that DB immediately jumped up and ripped the umbilical cord off at HER end instead of his. She did the same thing two years ago, but this time wasn't as bad because she did leave me enough on the outside this time to be able to hang a weight on what was left to help the placenta pass. Two years ago she actually ripped it off inside and it took way too long to pass even with several shots of oxytocin. We ended up treating her for laminitis as a precaution, soaking her feet several times a day, etc. Luckily she ended up fine, but my heart nearly stopped tonight when I saw the umbilicus lying on the ground still attached to the baby. "Not again" I thought, but as I said, it wasn't as bad this time. A little weight tied onto the stump and a shot of oxytocin and she was good. The colt was up VERY quickly, pooped, ate and was GALLOPING around the stall by the time he was three hours old. All's well that ends well. Me? I'm going to soak for awhile and then sleep for about a week.
