Shelby and Zak competed in their first event of the year this weekend. I think they did great for their second event ever, but unfortunately there was one glaring low that prevented them from placing.
Shelby was so ready for her dressage test, Zak was on point, listening, bending nicely in the warmup arena. She said she really felt like they were in the zone. They trotted in, and within 3 seconds the judge blew the whistle, off course. Shelby was so confused, because she thought she was doing it right. Started again, whistle again! She came out in tears. Someone explained to her that what she thought was the beginning of the test was slightly wrong. (Suzy, Caroline probably knows the test, not straight in, but a half diamond at X, BN test A) So they let her try one more time, but by then she was completely flustered, and Zak was confused by the in and out 3 times, and was feeding off her emotions. So, with the 4 points of penalties she came out with a score of 42.5. I told her that barring the 4 points, it was not a bad score for only her second dressage test ever. She got some really nice comments about his obedience, willingness and straightness. She just needs more work on bending.
On a great note, though, they rocked in the combined stadium and cross country! No faults, no time faults. Zak loves galloping and jumping through the fields! If she had only known the beginning of the test (which now she will NEVER forget!), and had not gotten so flustered, they would have placed.
She was disappointed, but I was happy with the outing. Now on to her next event June 20-21!
