!Hi everyone, My name's Michelle and I just aquired an older OTTB mare. I was told her papers were "lost" and she's 16 but after spending much time trying different combinations w/her tattoo, JC found her and she's actually 19! But I still really like her and am learning a lot about her personality. She acts like a 4yr old w/out the green, unending energy to say the least, knows all her cues & leads ect, but is extremely herd bound & barn sour so I have my work cut out for me. Her previous owner let her sit in the pasture for the past 4 yrs because she's too much horse for them, and they were told from the first owner that the mare was Parelli trained after the track, but the mare must've had some bad experiances somewhere along the way because her nose is all scarred up w/a big indentation from a tiedown or noseband.Plus she's very scared of the martingale and just pulls through any bit I try. I had her teeth done ( sharp points all over and cut up cheeks), had the vet check her-thumbs up- and had 2 chiropractic sessions so far. I have had her 4 weeks now, and she's finally beginning to bond with me. We're doing everything slooow, since all she wants to do is run. Here's a pic of her, she's put on some weight and is so pretty and slick

Welcome to exracers. To post a pic, you have to use a photo hosting site like photobucket, etc. etc.
Your mare sounds like a sweetie and I hope you have a lot of fun with her. What are your plans for her?

Ok I'll try the photobucket idea, thanks Im hoping to get her slowly started on the barrel pattern, I run with the NBHA here in CO and NM and my current barrel horse is just maxed out on speed and my 3 yr old wont be starting till next year. I know my new mare is a lot older but she's got so much energy, she gets quiet only if I step off and hand walk her out. So maybe over the next few months I can start her slow loping the pattern and see if/where she places later in the season. Im not one to rush things, esp with a new ( or young) gal

Welcome to the board! Sounds like your giving this mare the best chance possible to be successful, what a lucky girl! Also love to see OTTBs in roles other than the "traditional" English events. Can't wait for pics!
