Wish me luck. After my 2:00 lesson in English riding (I can't quite call what Red and I are doing Dressage yet), I am heading over to a farm to try my hand at team-penning on their horses. :brian:

Have fun! Team penning is a blast, as long as you don't get a cantankerous cow chasing YOU! (It HAS happened, ya know. : Are you going to be riding in your dressage saddle, 'cause I recommend something with a 'handle'! !!

Well, THAT just blew away a wonderful mental image of a football team in full gear being herded about by riders waving bull whips and ropes!!!

Hi there,
Team Penning IS a blast! The last time my AQH was pregnant, I got bored with dressage and tried it. Now I want a cow horse! The best way to learn to team pen well is to start slow. If you get too close and go too fast you'll lose your cow. They're so small, they can always turn a little faster than you think. Believe it or not trotting is the best way to start and stay back a hair further than you think you should so that you have time to head off their next move. If they do any "sorting" at the session, that's a good way to learn cows too. It's slower and more precise. Of course, if you're trying it out on a seasoned cow horse, ignore the above, all you have to do is HOLD ON!!!!
Hope you get to go when the weather is better. Have fun! Raven'sMom

My old horse was a cutting/roping horse....... I just hung on to the horn...... use to use him to catch horses when they broke out. He use to get so mad at me when I didn't throw a rope on the PoNees. Good thing I didn't know how to rope being in a barrel saddle. apparently he did barrels too. I tried to go around a telephone pole with him...... wrong move ... I had to climb out of the saddle or get my head knocked off. I did a lot of not so smart things as a kid...it's a wonder I am alive.

exactly what WE looked like, although, I was riding in a western saddle (thank goodness for those horns!). One ol' cow did have horns and it turned on my green 3 year old. Lizzie, although pretty cowy even as a youngster, high-tailed it for Dodge, with me hanging on for dear life! Too bad your deal got cancelled, you would have loved it! They closed the arena a while back and I sure miss that fun!
