Oh no...Cypress is an ER legend. So sorry for your loss, but so glad that you were together for so many years. What a lucky girl to have such a doting partner in you.

What a great horse. We all feel like we knew her a little. An exracers legend.

Oh I'm so sorry. She was a mainstay family member of Exracers. So many of us loved her from afar. RIP dear elegant girl and Hugs Ann!

I'm not sure that any of us on this board have owned an exracer longer than Ann has owned Cypress Babe..have we? Can't think of any so that truly makes Cypress our No. 1 exracer legend. Zenrider?--I know you had Flynn back then, but you bought Zen at auction, later, if I recall...

Thank you all. Here are the friends who understand just what a presence a horse can be in our lives, and just what an honor it is that they allow us to ride them. The loss is huge, but I realize today that my gratitude is greater.
I would be delighted to think that Cypress was our honorary Reine-de-Course on ER! I always pretended that she was, and maybe she came to deserve that title.
Alison, my husband brought me dark chocolate, and so did a friend. I bought the Beaujolais myself. I wish you could come over to have a glass with me! Without help, I can never polish off a bottle before it sours. And Bruce gave up drinking long before I met him.
A little about yesterday: Recently, Cypress had been slowing down, and seemed uncomfortable, but was still eating well, and sometimes flashing around the pasture to show that she remained The One in her little herd. Yesterday morning, she had a leg swollen very suddenly with cellulitis (we've battled that for years), elevated temperature, fluid in her lungs and with the heart murmur we've been hearing for some time now, it seemed that our treatment options would extend her life for a little while, but not resolve the problems. Last winter was hard on her, and even with blankets and extra calories, she had trouble maintaining her weight in the cold.
My vet was out of town, but the one who came was marvelous. He assured me I would not be jumping the gun, and he treated us both with exactly the level of compassion and detachment that I needed.
After a dose of something to make her more comfortable, Cypress walked with me slowly but without hesitation to the north corner of her pasture, stood and--I swear this is true--raised her head and gazed with what we sometimes call "the look of eagles," and I knew that she was seeing far beyond. I hope I die with that kind of dignity.
Her best friend, a younger mare named Annie, has been distraught. Annie has had Cypress as a pasture mate since she was a brand new filly. They made an amusing pair, the don't-touch-me Cypress and the gently curious and affectionate Annie. Lots of memories.

You did good by her. The description of her looking beyond made me cry.
Swift journeys across the Bridge to Cypress, and many healing thoughts for you & your heart heading your way.
