Edgie is suffering from something which looks like ringworm - but the vet scrapings say it isn't. They don't know what it is, as yet - any ideas?
It started about two years ago, but today he has about 6 patches. It only happens in Autumn/Winter. He's turned out. He comes in at night, and I've suggested we dampen his hay for a couple of weeks.
It doesn't seem to cause him discomfort, but it's on his back, his legs, his cheeks. It looks itchy and sore It's the typical ring of 'itchy' bumps.
Any help?

Is he losing hair? If not, maybe it's an allergic reaction? Flynn used to have an allergic reaction in the fall when at the one barn. It may have been from eating the falling leaves or the little spiders that may have been on the falling leaves. Thankfully, it never amounted to anything serious and once the leaves were gone the swelling was gone as well. He never had as much of an issue at the barn that I'm at now. Here's hoping whatever it is clears up soon.

I think you're right. But we have wait and see what the vet finds.I think it's an outside parasite. He used to live on shavings, now he's living on straw. It could be something in there.I'll let you know what the vet says. Any other suggestions would be welcome to pass on to the vet. Thanks, Zen.

How big are the rings? I was discussing this with my vet this year (Petey used to itch and lose hair everywhere when the weather got warm) and she said there is a fungus going around that mimics ringworm. Round, crusty, itchy spots that are not actually ringworm. She said to wash it with an anti fungal shampoo and then either use panalog ointment or MTG on it.

Thank you! We have no results as yet - and I certainly don't want to teach our vets their job - but all and any information is welcome until we actually know.

It's a fungus, as you suggested. but still no news on what and from where. Though it doesn't seem to be in his stable. We're doing a short ride tomorrow and will see whether it flares up again.
Bleuch.

Bleuch. OK, this begs the question's are you visiting Edgie right now? or has he moved up to your neck of the woods? or am I just misreading some of this entirely? Here's hoping whatever fungus he picked up clears up quick.

Well, no diagnosis. Still looks like ringworm to me, I'll try to post pix. They've given him steroids and it has cleared up, but - puzzling. Maybe they're crop circles!
