Bruce and I just came home from a nice getaway at a state park. But (or should I say BUTT!) there was a horrible, large, well lighted mirror in the bathroom. Why didn't I see this before? And I'm really feeling the flab, now, too.
I am going, once again, to change my diet. I think I'd better cut out sweets, salty snacks and go real easy on the fats for a while. And I have to get more exercise.
I think someone on this board once mentioned a web site that helps you structure a weight loss program? It has to be simple and realistic, and I'm reluctant to spend lots of money. I just can't keep going in this direction. What happened to my lucky metabolism?!? I want it back!

It isn't a structured diet, but i log all my food on calorie count. It gives you a realistic number on how many calories you are eating, and breakes it down into different catagories so you know how much of the cals are carbs, protein, fiber, and vitamins. Then you can adust your diet to increase the good, and lower the bad. You can also log exercise, and see how many calories you are really burning.
By increasing my protein intake, I have lost 20lbs in the last 2 months. I have finally reached my goal plus some. Cant tell you the last time I weighed 135!!! Now to maintain!!!

What is calorie count? A website? I hate counting things! Can't I just close my eyes, click my heels together three times, etc.?

You can do it! I never had to watch what I ate throughout high school and into my first couple years of college, but my final two years took their toll, and I've had to totally restructure my outlook on food and diet. I'm casually doing weight watchers - I was able to find all the information I needed online, so I didn't have to join, and I have a $3 knockoff app on my phone that tracks my points, calculates, etc.
I HATED it at first, but I'm getting into the routine now, and it's pretty easy. If nothing else, I can see how many or how few points something is and decide if it's worth it.
Good luck! I think we need to keep a motivation thread going - I don't know how long I'll last before I fizzle out but I'm down 8 lbs so far.

Yes, it's a website. There are many different ones to log. It is a pita, but it really does give you a good start. I know I used to calculate things in my head, but they were waaaayyyyy off!!!

www.myfitnesspal.comI have the app on my phone and it really helped me a lot. You enter in what you ate and it keeps track of the calories, fat, sugar etc. for you. eta: the hardest part is getting started. Just like Kim said, once you get into a routine it's so much easier. I started at the beginning of the year and I've lost 25lbs. I don't use the calorie counter as much now, because now I know what I can eat.

I have a pretty dumb phone, so no apps for me! I did just check out a book, Walk It Off, which affirms my instincts about small changes that can make significant difference. I might get a pedometer, too. My youngest daughter has lost 35 pounds just walking her dog every day, riding her bike to work a few times a week, and being very sensible about her diet. She's not "on a diet," but she just substitutes healthy alternatives for the foods that get her in trouble. I think this approach seems do-able. Of course she's single, and doesn't have a well-meaning husband offering her cupcakes and candy bars as evidence of his affection! (I know. I could have it much worse, right?!?)
So it's an easy bike ride to work for me--just 15 minutes, and I come home for lunch. Yesterday, I rode to and from in the morning, but drove in the afternoon. I also took my dog for a 20-minute walk early in the morning. Today, I biked both ways, both times. I'm super hungry right now, but Bruce isn't home for supper yet. This would be a great time to eat Oreos and a bowl full of chips. Someone congratulate me for a tall glass of water and celery with peanut butter!

What's this?! A week later and I'm not skinny yet!?! Today's bike ride should count for something, though. I didn't have to work until 11:00, so thought I'd pedal a few miles. I was taking it easy, telling myself this was activity, not exercise, but activity is good. Then my cell rang, and my friend says, "Did you forget we're meeting for coffee???" I got a LOT of exercise racing back, showering and driving downtown as fast as I could. My poor legs were like rubber for 5 minutes, and I was gasping through my shower.

Hey, I'm not going back to that horrible mirror in Hueston Woods, but I think I'm shaping up a tiny bit. Gradual, but noticeable change. As for diet, I'm just trying to keep the carbs and fat under control. I'm just a little bit active, which is more than the nothing I had been doing. Not riding my horse, sadly, but riding my bike to work and to the barn. Feel better, too.
