The Help is a 2009 novel by American author Kathryn Stockett. The story is about African American maids working in white households in Jackson, Mississippi during the early 1960s
I haven't read it yet, but did see the movie. The movie was great and gave me alot to think about. It was done nicely.

A lot of people raved about the book, but I found it somewhat unsatisfying. It was well written, but I felt like the author did not treat the subject matter seriously enough. And it really felt like it was written with a movie deal in mind.
I haven't seen the movie yet.

We read it in my book club and then we saw the movie. I had the same sentiment as HokieThea about the book. It was nicely written and an engaging story (no doubt benefiting from the author's own experiences with her maid), but some of it was patronizing in my opinion. Much more so in the movie, which I found trite. But, it was interesting to discuss the book with a group of non-Americans who know very little about the South.

I read the book a few years ago and really liked it, good read! I saw the movie recently and found it very entertaining.
