Looking for a jack donkey (standard size) to protect our goats.
We're located in northeastern PA
Can anyone point me in the right direction?? (I seem to remember someone was connected with a donkey rescue???)

Hi Katelyn - that's me in donkey rescue! ;D You don't want a jack to guard. A pair of jennets will typically have a maternal instinct to guard. Jacks, and rarely gelding donkeys, have been known to kill goats, chickens, etc. We have lots of pairs of jennets that have been very, very successful at guarding. We also have a mother/son pair (son is gelded) that guard calves wonderfully. Since we're in Colorado and too far away, try Save Your Ass Long Ear Rescue saveyourassrescue.org/ You will love having a couple of donkeys around. They are so affectionate and funny.

There's also Lost and Found Horse Rescue in Maryland: www.lfhrmaryland.org/They have a lot of donkeys. I would contact both rescues and let them know what you're looking for. They should have a good feel for which donkeys display the best behavior for guarding. Contrary to popular belief, not every donkey is suitable for guarding. They are as individual as horses. Hope that helps!

Thanks, Kelly!
That's great to know, too! The guy we got them from insisted you needed an ungelded jack!
I'll go check out those sites now!
