Caleb's Crossing is the new book by Geraldine Brooks. I liked it! Historical fiction based on a shred of 17th century American history. The title character is the first Native American to graduate from Harvard (based on actual events), and the narrator is a young woman who knows him and follows her own remarkable journey (fictional, but a fair representative of her time). Brooks is such a good storyteller.

ooh! Good to know. I loved People of the Book and Year of Wonder was good, too.

I just finished this book and really liked it. What a vivid description she paints. Makes me want to visit Martha's Vineyard now. And it reinforced my opinion that as a woman, I am glad to be living in New England now and not in the 17th century. lol
(SPOILER ALERT) I'm so sad about the ending. I know she tried to keep the facts and weave a novel around them ( I read the postscript), and she did it well. I wish she'd go beyond the facts and imagine what would have happened if both Joel and Caleb had lived on, tho.

Yes, I agree about the ending. It felt like such a loss for her, and for anyone who could have known those two remarkable men.
