I had nothing to read. I had a list but couldn't find any of those books in my library, WAH! Then as I was browsing the library's aisles I happened on Rushdie. I didn't know which book to start with, so I picked the most controversial one of course, the satanic verses. I've just started, and it's certainly very different from what I read over the summer (Song of ice and fire --aargh now I have to wait for the next one and it's going to take years! -- and Lord of Misrule, which I found interesting, and well written.) Anyway, have you guys read Rushdie's books?

No, I haven't. I picked one up once and was so intimidated! I should try again, with alcohol.

I have! And he's a marvelous writer. Start with Haroun and the Sea of Stories. It's actually a children's story - or at least, that was his intended audience. I've also read Shalimar the Clown.
You can detect a different-than-American-English syntax in his writing, which if anything lends another dimension to his relentlessly creative and original storytelling. I'm a fan.
I should add that I've not read the Satanic Verses, for whatever that is worth.

Oh yes! Satanic Verses are not satanic - there are a few controversial Muslim opinions, which is why the poor man is in hiding with a Fatwah upon him.
He is a story-teller.

I know, Bara, nothing satanic at all! But I can see how he could rub some people the wrong way, hehe. He IS a great story-teller and the way he writes is actually very funny at times, with some hilarious images / metaphors and of course the "different" English syntax JA mentions. I was a bit intimidated at first too, Ann, but now that I've advanced a bit in the book, I'm having a great time!

I almost picked up that one, Bonesmom. I think it's going to be next.
