Thanks for your worry! We're ok and I'm getting past the worried feeling and getting to more of a contented stage. Found a shipper that will take him to Purdue for $225 and then another friend offered to possibly take him there for me but haven't heard back from her. Both the shipper and friend want to take him alive but my heart says no. It still won't be easy when the time comes but I'm feeling ok about it. I've been having dreams about him free from his body and cavorting around happily so they're really helping.

I feel so bad for you. what a tough decision. But you're doing the right thing I think for you and for Augie. He sounds like he's a real dear and deserves a pain free end to it all. He'll be so much happier over the bridge! I don't think I could send him off alive. I think I would be more content knowing that I was there for him in his last minutes, not some stranger.

.. don't send him on that scary journey all on his own. I know that puts all the pressure on you. But he TRUSTS you so much. You're the one he'll take each step for.
I'm happy to hear that you are reconciled to what has to happen. I have no idea what 'Purdue' is - but I can guess. Oh, no - no.
Let him be with you till the end. Love B

Don't worry. I won't let him go a scarey trailer ride. Purdue is a university that has a good equine dept.

Purdue is a university in Lafayette, IN. It has a vet school and a very good equine department.
Vida, I think it is a good thing you've done with Augie, and I think it's a good thing he'll be doing for other equid's after his time.
It takes a special person to give an animal the chance, and an even more special person to know when it is enough.

Vida.. I once was a gobetween ina horse rescue deal getting an Arabian mare from Topeka Kansas to Tennessee. When she got to my house, I could see she was badly foundered and probably had cushings. She was an older mare, sweet as could be, but definitly in a lot of pain. I talked to the adopter about Hannah's situation, and she agreed that a long haul would be just too risky for the old mare and sent me the money to have her euthanized. It was a very sad decision, but when I took Hannah to the vet, the vet said we did the right thing.. that Hannah likely would have suffered greatly on the trip, and if she arrived alive, she would not be standing.
It was very hard, but the best thing for Hannah. I was thankful that the adopter trusted my judgement and didn't put that poor mare through a grueling trailer trip...
I wish you the best and send you lots of hugs. I know this is difficult, but your dreams are probably accurate....

What a wonderful facility.
Here's a story may make you smile. I have a friend, Jane, who has 29-yr-old Inky. I meet Jane riding occasionally - and you're always scared to ask about Inky. However. I saw Jane on Saturday on her new young horse and said 'Err - Inks??'
"Ooh," said Jane, airily. "Well, the vet spoke to me and said it was 'time'. So Jane booked the appointment. An hour before the vet was due, Inky jumped a 5-barred gate to get to greener pastures. So when the vet arrived, he and Jane debated what to do.
"Well," he said. "Since I'm here, I'll give her an M.O.T" (Apply Claire LV - an MOT is what cars have to have in the UK after a certain age.)
"Right," said Jane. "What does that entail?" "Well," said the vet. I'll check her eyes."
Jane sorrowfully shook her head. "Well - no, she's only got one." The vet thought for a moment. "Her teeth!" he said.
"Hasn't got any," apologised Jane. "Legs?" asked the vet. "They don't work," said Jane. "I know!" said the vet - inspired. "I'll give her a liver check!"
Inky passed! ("The only member of our family," commented Jane, "who WOULD pass a liver test!")
So Inky goes on.
Very, very hard with an old horse. But harder still with a young and injured horse.
Still thinking and worrying about you. B
