As you guys know - I looked at 2 horses in MD this past weekend.
Both had some sort of skin ick...
It looked like grey, flakey patches, especially on the face and under the saddle.
I asked about it and both people said it wasn't fungus, just from sweating in the summer.
so - what is it???

Does it come off easily with a finger nail and leave a bare patch? Kind of dark grey in color? I've had horses get this one their faces before. I think more on horses that tend to be a bit oily and I wonder sometimes if it might be for having so many baths. I tend to take a softer rubber curry and rub on it during a soapy bath. I always thought it was clogged pores/sweat glads plus dirt. Not that they aren't cleaning their horses well but even dust from rolling in the stalls. Never really got to the bottom of it, but just treated it like above and it went away.

I have to agree with Jens answer. Our Standardbreds get it too and sometimes the hair will shed out and make it really thin. I also use a rubber curry and try to keep after it. Our horses get rinsed everyday after their workout- all year round. So they are clean, sometimes too clean.

That's it exactly, Jen!
Kind of like a dark grey, very light scab - flakes off and leaves a hairless spot.
It was on their forehead, around the ears and eyes and bridge of nose. It was also most of everywhere the saddle pad would cover.
NOT on the girth line, though?
Thanks!

I think it's a humid MD thing LOL! A few of my horses have it also-it's not itchy to them and actually none of mine get it where the saddle sits. It's usually face, inside of hocks and sometimes it presents as crud on the fronts of the hind cannons. I usually partake in benign neglect as mine also do not become totally hairless.
